Let's just preface this by saying that we're in the midst of a global pandemic, and now is not the time for a productivity contest. However, if you've been feeling restless or bored after baking your 17th loaf of sourdough bread, perhaps it's time to explore some online courses if you feel like you need to shift your focus somewhere. Here are some options for casual hobbyists to serious hustlers who want to add another line to their resumes.

LASALLE: Acting, poetry, fashion portraits, charcoal drawing, and more

Arts institution LASALLE has rolled out a series of short online courses designed for beginners and hobbyists. Each course consists of six to 14 classes, all conducted via Zoom by LASALLE's faculty, alumni, and industry experts. You'd have to pay to attend, but some of these can be claimed under your SkillsFuture credit.

Masterclass: Culinary arts, gardening, music production, photography, design

You've probably already come across an ad for Masterclass. Think of it as a cross between an online course and Netflix: each class has about 20 lessons that are around 10 minutes each. You can go at your own pace, or binge watch the entire class at once. The draw of this is that Masterclass's wide range of lessons are taught by luminaries in their respective industries: You can pick up photography from Annie Leibovitz, singing from Christina Aguilera, cooking from Gordon Ramsay, acting from Samuel L. Jackson, tennis from Serena Williams, storytelling from Neil Gaiman, and even filmmaking from Martine Scorsese.

An annual all-access membership is at US$180. For more information, click here.

Yale: Negotiation, psychology, finance

Forget learning how to make a sourdough starter. If you're trying to use this time to develop your skillset, might as well learn something that'll look impressive on your resume. Here's an Ivy League option for professional certification: Yale has courses on climate change, architecture, and even "The ABCs of child-rearing". The effective negotiation course would probably come in handy for a lot of us, and there's even a course on financial markets taught by economist and Nobel laureate Robert J. Shiller.
