See Samira Wiley in the television adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel
Don't bid farewell to Poussey Washington just yet. Yes, while the fifth season premiere of Orange Is The New Black on 9 June won't bring the inmate back, you'll still get to see American actress Samira Wiley on the small screen, walking in somebody else's shoes.
Debuting on 26 April on Hulu, the 30-year-old will star as a "handmaid" called Moira, who's part of a misogynist religious group in a dystopian future. Based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale, it looks at a totalitarian America torn in an ongoing civil war, where women aren't allowed to work, handle money or read. Wiley, along with lead actress and Mad Men alumni Elizabeth Moss, are among a group of women called "handmaids", whose fertility has been exploited to elite men to bear offspring for their own families.
Unlike Poussey's gentle, almost demure nature, Wiley's Moira is touted as a fighting spirit, rebelling at every chance she gets. The television adaptation resonates in 2017 as a strong, feminist look at what society can become if we're not careful about equal rights, and ignore the values and opportunities that women from generations ago have marched for.
