#ThrowbackThursday: Princess Diana in India
The people's princess
According to a recent article from The Wall Street Journal, Indian designer Anita Dongre's website crashed after the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wore her dress in Mumbai this week. It's the Kate Middleton Effect: Back in 2012 when the royal visited Singapore, the patterned RAOUL skirt she wore sold out within a day. Everyone's watching what the 34-year-old is wearing, and more so, what she's doing.
Since their arrival into India on 10 April, Middleton and Prince William have played cricket in Mumbai, rubbed shoulders with Bollywood artistes Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, and fed baby elephants at Kaziranga National Park. Watching them go about their week-long tour of India and Bhutan, we couldn't help but draw references to the late Princess Diana's spirit that clearly lives on in the hearts of the royal couple. In 1992, the people's princess herself visited India with Prince Charles. Stopping by Hyderabad, Rajasthan and Agra, she famously posed for an iconic photo in front of the Taj Mahal alone, which set the rumour mill on her rocky marriage to Prince Charles in motion.
Nearly a quarter of a century later, nothing much has changed. Young royals are still under a microscopic view, where dresses continue to sell out within a day and websites poise themselves for a crash.
