If there’s any doubt at all of K-pop’s influence in the fashion world, the 2021 ANDAM Fashion Award is stamping it out. Lisa Manoban of Blackpink (arguably the biggest girl group to have come out of South Korea yet) has been selected to be part of the annual fashion award’s jury. The Thai-born performer — who just happens to also be the global ambassador for Parisian fashion house CELINE — will join a guest panel that includes Phoebe Philo, fashion director Suzanne Koller, Chinese singer and songwriter Chris Lee, as well as Pyer Moss’ Kerby Jean-Raymond.
Cruella is set to be Disney’s most stylish villain yet.
A few highly anticipated movie trailers were released this week. And one of them was Cruella, a movie that’s centred on the 101 Dalmatians villain and starring Emma Stone. As the trailer reveals, fashion designer Estella de Vil (played by Stone) was originally a redhead before revamping her image into the iconic half-black-half-white-haired look and subsequently, becoming obsessed with the combination. Then there’s also that stunning reveal of her new self at a party, one that we’re sure will be meme-d to death. But most importantly, we can’t wait for all the punk-rock fashion that be part of Stone’s characterisation.
Zerina Akers launches the Black Owned Everything marketplace.
Beyoncé’s inner circle is just as socially conscious as she is. Stylist Zerina Akers — who’s been responsible for Beyoncé’s iconic looks on everything from the red carpet to her high-concept visual albums — has officially launched the Black Owned Everything marketplace. What started out as an Instagram account used to follow and promote Black-owned businesses across fashion, beauty, and more, has now evolved to be a consolidated e-commerce platform to shop items by these businesses. It’s a platform for independent Black businesses to thrive and showcase their work on an elevated avenue. And what’s bigger and more elevated than a member of Queen Bey’s court?
Alexander McQueen partners up with Vestiaire Collective for a move towards circularity
Vestiaire Collective launches its ‘Brand Approved’ programme with fashion house Alexander McQueen. The premise is simple enough: a select group of Alexander McQueen clients will be contacted should they have any pieces by the house that they wish to sell in exchange for a credit note that will allow them to buy new pieces in selected Alexander McQueen stores. The pre-loved pieces will then go to Vestiaire Collective that will tag them with external NFC tags so that prospective buyers will have all the information confirming their authenticity. While Alexander McQueen is the first fashion house to be part of the programme, let’s hope that more get onboard and promote a more circular fashion ecosystem.
Rihanna is accused of being culturally insensitive (again).
Rihanna’s been in the news more than usual recently and they haven’t exactly been in the best light. The latest involves an Instagram post by the performer where she poses topless while wearing Savage x Fenty boxers, but also matched with a lavender-coloured Ganesha pendant. Understandably, the post has riled up the Hindu community for the disrespect shown to one of their deities. This is however, not the first time that Rihanna has caused religious controversy. It was only last year that she had to publicly apologise for using a song that included Islamic verses for her Savage x Fenty fashion show. Rihanna has yet to address this latest incident.
Haider Ackermann joins Maison Ullens.
Colombian-born fashion designer Haider Ackermann has been rather quiet since leaving his appointment at Berluti in 2018. And his latest appointment may not generate as big a buzz as landing a role at a brand as well-known as Berluti. Belgian luxury brand Maison Ullens has hired Ackermann onboard as a creative consultant, in charge of overseeing new designs at the brand as well as its overall aesthetic. Maison Ullens is mostly known for its knitwear and operates three stores in New York, Colorado, and Paris. Ackermann of course, will continue designing for his own, eponymous label that counts Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton as ardent fans.
