How to recognise the 7 signs of ageing and treat them effectively
Ageing is never an easy thing to address. The first response may be denial, or even obliviousness to the creeping signs of age that are beginning to show on or faces, necks and even our hands.
For every woman (and man), ageing can make its presence felt in a variety of ways. From a face that looks more dull and lacklustre than it used to, to skin that is not as even as it once was. Even before very obvious signs of ageing like lines and wrinkles show up, there are smaller indicators such as skin that is drier than it used to be.
One of the surest ways you can tell that you've aged is that you need more makeup than you did in the past to achieve the same, youthful effect. But slapping on more concealer, foundation or illuminator is neither a long-term approach nor a solution. We speak to the Amaris B. Clinic's medical director, Dr. Ivan Puah, to find out what the seven signs of ageing are, and the ways in which we can address ageing quickly and effectively.
What is your opinion are the seven signs of ageing and which signs would Asian women tend to see first, in which parts of their face or neck, and why?
The signs of ageing are dark spots — which are also called hyperpigmentation and are caused by a variety of reasons – sagging skin, a dull complexion, lines and wrinkles, dry skin, patchiness and open pores. Different women show different signs of ageing, as it all boils down to several factors, such as improper cleansing, environmental factors, and genetics. Some show signs of ageing on their neck while some may experience crow's feet (around the eyes) or sagging skin.
What are the main causes of ageing and how can we fight them on a daily basis? Could you give us some simple tips that might help?
Ageing is inevitable but ageing gracefully is vital; premature ageing is not. There are many things you can do to prevent premature ageing, such as adopting a healthy diet, keeping an active lifestyle, not smoking, having a positive mindset, committing to a daily cleansing regime and monthly facials, as well as always applying sunblock and trying to stay out of the sun. Beauty is truly from within. Bad habits and a poor lifestyle will only show its effects on the skin many years later.
Where are some areas that women often neglect?
The neck, hands and eyes. Many Singaporeans do not apply or take care of their neck, hands and eyes. They invest in skincare and treatments for their overall skin, but there is no special care on these areas. Caring for your skin takes daily commitment, so small habits such as rubbing your eyes and not applying sunblock to your neck (or even the entire body) must be corrected. You may be able to conceal certain issues with makeup, but it is a short-term solution and I don't think you would want to apply cake-y makeup to your neck or hands.
Do men and women age differently? Why and how?
A woman's collagen is reportedly less dense than a man's, which means a woman's skin is roughly about 15 years older than a man of the same age.
