An insider's guide to spa-ing at home
Going to a day spa is a great treat for special occasions. But there are time when you want to spa where you're most comfortable — at home. Besides transforming your home or bathroom into a relaxation portal, it can be a fun opportunity to whip up some homemade recipes for the face, body and hair. Here are a few favourite home remedies — use all of them for top to toe indulgence; or mix and match them according to your mood.
SETTING THE MOOD
The first and most important step is creating the right environment for your mind to start relaxing. Music plays a pivotal role in changing my mood so I have a few favourite playlists bookmarked for different occasions. For me, scented candles signify indulgence. The warm candlelight help to enhance the relaxation. My favourite scents from JOIK are La Bohème (warm and enchanting), Strawberries and Wine (girly), Bamboo (fresh), and Night (mystical). For a touch of luxury, I bring out my best fluffy towels and bathrobe for my 'spa day'. The comfort of soft, dense towels is unbeatable.
I begin my home spa session with a hot shower. Steam helps to open up pores and breathing in warm steam clears the nasal passage. Start by running your shower its hottest temperature for a few minutes to gather the steam. If you like to use a de-stressing aroma, put a few drops of your favourite essential oil on a warm washcloth. Then put the washcloth up to your face and take a deep breath of the oil-scented steam. After that leave the cloth in a corner for the oil to continue scenting the steam while you take a shower. After washing off your body soap, take a freshly cut lemon and rub it on rough knees and elbows. The citric acid will soften rough spots and also help to lighten darker areas.
Next, exfoliate. I’m a big fan of no frills but efficient remedies so my go-to body scrub is made with just three ingredients — ½ cup coconut oil, ½ cup brown sugar, and ½ teaspoon vanilla. This scrub leaves your skin smooth and silky so there’s no need to moisturise. Apply directly to damp skin and massage with light circular motions. Do be careful in the shower as the oil tends to make the floor slippery.
Everybody wants silky hair! While there are firm believers who use coconut oil for their hair, I prefer using argan oil as it absorbs faster and is a lot easier to wash off compared to coconut oil. For a quick fix, apply two to three drops of ANIA's Pure Argan Oil starting from the ends of your hair. You will notice an immediate difference to your hair texture. For deep luscious conditioning, apply two tablespoons of Argan Oil to damp hair and wrap with a towel. Leave on for a minimum of 15 minutes (or as long as you like) then rinse off using shampoo.
While I’m wrapped up top to toe in cozy towels, it’s time to lie down and give my face some lovin’. Strawberries are great multi-taskers. They go well with cream (or chocolate) as delicious tasty treats. When frozen they add a subtle fragrance and texture to smoothies. Strawberries are also amazing for our skin. For an exfoliating and hydrating face mask, slice up a few strawberries then mash and mix with plain yogurt, honey, and a little bit of oatmeal. Then apply onto cleansed face in gentle circular motion. Leave on for 15 minutes before washing off with warm water. Complete the face treatment with a toner and your usual serum or moisturiser.
