Eric Ryan, founder of vitamin gummy brand, Olly, does not want to waste this crisis
New gift of time
In times of change and uncertainty like COVID-19, we wanted to pick on some intelligent brains to know their take on life ahead of us. How are things looking? How do we adapt to a life of remote working? More importantly, how do we make the best out of a crisis like now?
We've had the founders of Supergoop!, Vanderohe, Thann, alongside globally renowned creatives in the likes of makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench and perfumers Alberto Morillas and Dora Baghriche share their work-from-home routines with us.
Here, Eric Ryan, ceo and founder of the vitamin gummy brand, Olly shares his thoughts and work-from-home routine:
How has life changed since COVID-19?
Like most families, we started the year over scheduled just trying to keep up with the pace of life before COVID brought our fast spinning world to a sudden stop. While we found new challenges with distance learning for the kids and remote work for myself, we enjoyed the new gift of time and togetherness. I love the idea of never wasting a crisis and looking for the things you now do that you could not do differently. So, at home and work we are creating a list of "things that won't change" as the world opens back up to help us come out of this challenge stronger than when we went in. While we will never return to the world pre-covid, I am optimistic what will emerge of better life of using our precocious resource of time in a more meaningful way.
An Early Start
I have always been an early riser but with the kid's home from school, the time between 5 to 8am is now essential for productivity. I frequently have a Zoom call with Europe so my quick cheat is a spray of dry shampoo to avoid bed head or that just out of the shower look. My morning routine typically includes Supergoop! moisturiser for UV all day protection, Myro deodorant, two Olly immunity gummies and of course, method hand wash. Spoiler alert, I co-founded or invested in all these brands so I'm a bit biased. But the most important of my morning routine is my addition to Nespresso coffee pods. Like most of California, Aviator Nation sweats have become my new daily uniform.
A morning of distance learning and work
Our home is a buzz of activity in the morning with juggling work and helping the kids with distance learning. Or more accurately constant negotiations over doing school worksheets. Can I just say that I have never appreciated the teachers of this world more than right now!
My daughter and I typically take Piper for a walk between Zoom classes and meetings and have added the tradition acacia bowls for a late morning snack to help support our local café. The boys and I jump on the trampoline between their school sets to keep our energy up and anxiety down.
As the schoolwork and Zoom calls wind down, we have been using the afternoon time for activities. Before COVID our afternoons were a whirlwind of carpooling kids between school and afternoon activities, so we are so thankful for this new family time.
Typically, we get out for a bike ride, swim or my daughter has taken up gardening. We seem to be hurting ourselves more with all the physical activity, so my new company Welly keeps us in the game with First Aid that shows an injury is just a trophy of a well lived life.
The greatest gift of sheltering in place is that we finally have time to cook and enjoy a sit-down family meal. We try to start early around 5pm to signal the evening and eliminate the temptation to stay in productive mode. Our new favorite tradition is pizza Friday night and we are close to finally perfecting our pie by the end of the quarantine. The upside of distance learning is no evening homework so it gives us the opportunities to play, build and enjoy the time together.
Evening Mountain Bike Ride
When the shelter in place was announced, I made an impulsive purchase to buy an electric mountain bike since we live in foothills of Mount Tamalpais which has some of the best trails in the country. It's been great for riding off the stress of the day but with this type of bike you not only get a killer workout but also can cover a lot of ground which makes the sport more interesting. I find it's a quick easy wafer to reset my mind and put the day in perspective before the bedtime routine with the kids.
The stress of balancing family and work during this time has certainty led to some restless but Olly Sleep is helping to ensure the squirrels don't run wild in my head. We are all feeling heightening anxiety in this time of uncertainty so getting a night of healthy sleep is essential to our immunity and overall sense of wellness.
