NYFW SS17: Coolest beauty looks

Pretty gritty

It's up to you New York, New York to showcase trends that are not just edgy, but wearable for everyday

New York Fashion Week showcased tonnes of interesting looks that made us reconsider the way we do our makeup. One of the biggest trends was underliner — or eyeliner worn specifically on the lower lids. Whether smudged or precise, this is great look to try out in the Fall and perfect by next Summer. Get inspired by colour, new ways to wear black liner and lips that are luscious and multi-dimensional.

1. Overtanned skin
While Claire Danes went too far with her Agent Orange fake tan at the 2016 Emmy's, the models at Alexander Wang attained just the right amount of bronzed flesh. This gritty take on bronzer and blusher — think brushed up brows and dishevelled hair — highlighted the freshness of bare skin in the best possible way.

2. Galaxy eyes
You've tried the trend on your nails, now bathe your eyes in a wash of shimmery purples, celestial whites and  transparent orange-pinks for a swirl of immaculately blended heavenly shades.

3. Negative space liner
What speaks louder than OTT makeup? Makeup that isn't there. At Francesca Liberatore, a simple swipe of floating liner on the lids paired with slicked-back hair, was an undeniably cool combo.

4. That dreaded hairstyle
There was plenty of cries of cultural appropriation at Marc Jacobs, as models of all ethnicities wore fake, coloured dreadlocks created by Etsy seller @dreadsbyJena. While Marc Jacobs himself has since apologised for displaying a "lack of sensitivity", from a purely aesthetic point of view, we found this hairstyle, that was purportedly influenced by director Lana Wachowski, beautiful.

5. '70s bowl cut
Will the bowl cut ever die? Not when it's this chic and versatile. Models hid their natural hair under these sleek wigs, and paired with purple eyeshadow and a healthy, bronzed complexion, they looked so perky, it was almost unreal.

6. Monochromatic mood
Why not take the black-and-white trend up a notch by matching your makeup to your nails? This inspired combination of doll lashes (draw in your lower lashline), soft ombré lips and a super chic manicure is cornucopia of ideas.

7. Teardrop liner and watermelon pink lips
What is that shade of luminous pink lipstick at Bibhu Mohapatra? We want to know, as we love the intensely pigmented colour and creamy, matte finish. Also worth notice? The quirky liner. Almost like a squiggle of pen ink gone awry, this is one look we're going to adopt to update our liner game.

8. Special excess
Every once in awhile, a designer or makeup team resurrects the Robert Palmer-girl look to varying degrees of success. This time we're digging the sultry, smoky eye in metallic greys and the cool polish of the glossy, cherry lipstick.

9. Plumped up pink
We instantly adored the lush, gradated pink lips seen at Creatures of Comfort. It's the only punchy accent you need — besides good skin.

10. Block party
A thick, block-y cat eye on Asian-shaped eyes? Yes, please!
