MFW SS17: Boldest beauty statements

Go big or go home

Trust Milan to serve up a hot dish of Italian glamour. Big hair, inventive glitter and brilliant streaks of colour were the orders of the week

Mamma Mia! We loved the high-octane beauty looks that were showcased in Milan. For summer, colour was a big trend, with energetic hues of blue, orange, and purple appearing on many of the eye makeup looks. Glitter continued to be part of the beauty conversation, with interesting twists from Fendi and Piccione.Piccione. Inspired to try something new? Here are ten of our favourites.

1. Checquered flag
At Antonio Marras, graphic black-and-white blocks were painted on the lids, but the dishevelled beehives and stripped-down makeup on the rest of the face, gave it a modern twist.

2. Kabuki lips
The delicate, thin ropes of braids and artful, two-toned lips at San Andrès Milano — we love the pearlescent pink mixed with a punchier hue — is something we're keen to try IRL.

3. War paint
Carrying on the trend of pared-down makeup with one signature highlight, at Max Mara, hand-drawn strips of colour were applied high on the cheekbones. Try summery hues like saturated pastels or crisp primary colours.

4. Glitter lips and liner
A standout look for us was this inspired combination of peekaboo black liner and deep gold glitter over pink lips at Fendi.

5. Full-on Italian glamour
Think you can't do bold brows, sculpted eyes, thick black liner, overdrawn nude lips and false lashes all at one go? Think again. The artists at Moschino made this exaggerated look — thinks '50s starlet on steroids — work with pizzazz.

6. Brilliant blue
Blue was a major trend at several shows, but we liked the look at Cristiano Burani especially, as the smudge of  shadow below the lower lash line looked fresh and slightly unexpected.

7. Lip print
Quirky and tongue-in-cheek, the tromp l'oeil lip drawn over a part of the mouth was delightfully bizarre.

8. Glitter and neon
If glitter on the lips is not practical for everyday, try this combination: a streak of fluorescent, crayoned-on colour and a dash of sparkle on the lids.   Cividini
9. Matte red lips and satin-y skin
At Trussardi, the precisely-applied scarlet lips may not have seemed groundbreaking, but when paired with a sexy, morning-after sheen on the eyes and cheekbones, it looked positively scandalous.

10. Cartoon shimmer
Sign us up for this look. A marker pen-like reverse banana shape on the eyes is filled in with a pigmented, shimmer-flecked shadow.
