Any lipstick aficionado worth their salt can attest that matte formulations have been ruling the roost for quite some time now, but it seems like we have a new contender for the throne. In 2019, we're embracing lip formulas beyond the liquid, cream, or balm. The lippie in the spotlight as of late: the lip powder.

Early adopters include movers-and-shakers of the beauty industry such as Irene Kim, Aimee Song, and — of course — Kylie Jenner. Below, all the details about said powders, from what it does to how to use it. Pucker up like you've never done before, ladies.

Lip what?
A K-Beauty export, lip powders provides pouts with a blurred, soft-focus effect in a matte finish — without the desert-like dryness and flaking typically caused by matte formulas. The finished look is reminiscent of an age-old trick often employed by MUAs, where blusher is tapped over lips.

The packaging
Lip powders are available in several variations, from palettes to sponge applicators to traditional bullet types.

How to use
It comes down to the type of lip powder used, though the general consensus seems to be that fingers and sponges work best, application-wise. Whatever the tool, make sure to keep dabbing and blotting at the formula to ensure a natural, diffused look.

The brands
It might be relatively new to the market, but forward-thinking labels have already caught on. Below, our picks to kick-start your venture towards a soft, powdered pout.
