How to nail that easy, breezy Laneway beauty look

How to nail that easy, breezy Laneway beauty look

Saving face

Text: Renée Batchelor

Taking inspiration from some of the performers this year — including Wolf Alice's Ellie Rowsell — here are our tips for keeping and looking cool this Laneway

If you enjoyed the brief, cold spell in Singapore in early January, you'll also be well aware that said cold spell is pretty much over. Which means if you're going to Laneway this Saturday, you can expect high-temperatures, lots of sunshine and general stickiness. The good news? We're actually praying there'll be no rain... and the subsequent mud. The bad news? While you're there to enjoy the music, you still want to look (relatively) put-together.  You may have your best hipster outfit planned, but what about your hair and makeup? Here's what we would recommend for a simple, weatherproof face and hairstyle.

START WITH SUNSCREEN
Why do we feel the need to remind you of this again? Well, maybe it's because a skin doctor did not recommend using makeup bases and foundations with SPF but actual sunscreen. Let this be your starter to both clear skin, and staying sun-safe. If you have good-ish skin, skip your foundation and tinted moisturiser altogether and apply some stick foundation and concealer wherever you need coverage.

SKIP THE MASCARA AND OPT FOR KILLER BROWS INSTEAD
Fact: Mascara and heavy liner tends to get all smudgy with the triple factors of heat, perspiration and crowds. If you're the kind who looks worse for wear, once your makeup heads south, pre-empt this by framing your face with bold brows — try a truly budge-proof formula like Clio's Killbrow — and skipping the mascara and liner altogether. Or embrace that lived-in liner look and go full-on tortured, indie singer vibes.

TRY A LONG-LASTING LIP CRAYON
Again this is not an atmosphere where we would recommend liquid lipsticks — which can bleed, crack or disappear — nor anything too glossy, goopy or sticky that will get stuck in your hair. A plush, lip crayon is a nice compromise, and can be the main focus of your look, adding a touch of brightness to the skin especially in a punchy shade like hot pink or orange, while being relatively easy to reapply with just your phone camera.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO GET A BIT MESSY
No don't go rolling in the (hopefully non-existent) mud, but rather opt for flowing bedhead tresses or undone buns for a slightly dishevelled rock n' roll vibe. Second day hair is fine, just spray on some dry shampoo or foam at the roots to avoid looking too greasy before you head out. A complicated braid can look like you're trying to hard.

DON'T SKIP THE DEO
Why? Just don't. There's no need to wear heavy fragrances, but a light perfume will not go amiss. If not, opt for a heavy duty anti-perspiration or even deodorant wipes snuck in your fanny pack or sling, which you can share with your friends. Just remember to dispose of these responsibly.
