Why you should embrace the stick foundation
We'll admit that stick foundations may not be the most intuitive base makeup out there. After all, Asia in particular seems to be in love with the ease of a cushion foundation, and it seems a new one is released almost every month by a different brand. But we've grown to love the stick foundation as an alternative for those who want slightly heavier, longer-lasting coverage, and who want to apply it on hard to reach areas like the corners of the nose.
Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) Beauté is releasing a new All Hours Foundation Stick next month that promises a matte finish. But there are other stick foundations that we love. Clé de Peau Beauté released a stick foundation last year that has an incredible texture, and a dewy, radiant finish. Here are other reasons to love the stick foundation.
THEY'RE EASY TO CARRY AROUND AND USE
Unlike cushion foundations (too big for small purses) and liquid or cream foundations (too messy), the stick foundation is a truly portable product that can fit in the smallest of spaces. Whip it out and use your iPhone mirror for a quick touch-up in a taxi. Under a minute to do your face in the morning? Dot stick foundation where needed and blend, blend, blend.
THEY HAVE COOL TRANSFORMATIVE TEXTURES
The new YSL Beauté All Hours Foundation Stick has a smooth cream to powder texture that is easy to blend, and gives skin a velvety, matte finish. The Clé De Peau Beauté Radiant Stick Foundation meanwhile has a more sheer finish and transforms from a cream-gel to a lightweight liquid that has a cooling sensation on the skin. Also forget the thick and cake-y stick foundations of the past, the new gen formulas have been developed to feel amazing and weightless on skin.
THEY CAN DOUBLE UP AS CONCEALER OR A CONTOURING PRODUCT
Depending on the coverage and texture, many stick foundations can also act as concealers, as unlike other foundation textures like liquids and mousses, they stay put when applied, ensuring ample coverage over marks and spots. Love the texture and blendability of your stick foundation? Buy it a few shades darker for seamless contouring around the cheekbones, nose and jawline or go with a lighter shade to highlight and lift parts of the face. Though not technically a foundation, products like Fenty Beauty's Match Stix Matte Skinstick are also designed to be multi-use.
THEY HAVE A MORE SKIN-LIKE FEEL
While liquids and creams glide over complexions, they can sometimes feel mask-like, covering up the skin's natural texture. If you already have good skin, stick foundations will allow more of its natural texture to show through and it's also easier to layer over more coverage without the risk of it looking cake-y.
THEY COME IN MORE SHADES THAN EVER
It used to be that stick foundations only came in a few, key shades for most brands. Things are changing with Lush Cosmetics (yes of the bath bomb fame) announcing that they will be debuting a new, solid foundation (thought it's egg-shaped rather than stick-shaped) in 40 shades. Meanwhile brands like Flesh Beauty offer stick foundations — designed to be non-ashy on all complexions — in 40 shades as well.
