5 new ways to wear red eyeliner, as seen on the Valentino pre-fall 2019 runway
To counter Monday blues, Valentino comes to the rescue. Today's SOS serving arrives via the French label's pre-fall 2019 collection, unveiled in Tokyo days ago. Amidst the red and black frilly frocks, celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath injected red eyeliner onto models' fresh palettes as a nod to Japanese culture.
An emerging trend? We think so. The dramatic makeup look appeared at Dior's fall/winter 2018 runway spotlighting deconstructed liner, while graphic outlines were coloured with a heavy hand around the eyes of Vivienne Westwood's spring/summer 2019 girls.
Classic on the lips and cheeks, the colourway's timeless reputation doesn't extend much further than that. Still, McGrath, with her agile flick of the wrist, demonstrates just how flexible the colour can be applied to accent and to dramatise. Only one real rule applies, and it has nothing to with makeup — keep hair out of the way; streamlined and unfussy is the way to go. Remember, the idea is sophisticated, not satanic.
