Aesop Sublime Replenishing Night Masque review: The hydrating sleeping mask developed for skin in serious need of saving

Holding out for a hero

Make no mistake, Aesop hasn't come up with a miracle cure. As much as we'd like to believe that there'll soon be a Supreme — an all-in-one product capable of reversing years' worth of skin damage — it seems such a reality isn't quite in the cards yet. Still, it's safe to say the Australian luxury label comes pretty close with their latest addition; a vitamin-rich gel cream that promises brighter, softer skin in a matter of hours. Aptly named the Sublime Replenishing Night Masque, it harbours a reparative formula so potent, you'll observe discernable results upon waking.

We'd liken it to catnip for the millennial set in need of instant gratification, especially for those prone to committing skincare blunders. So, if you slept with your makeup on; neglected SPF; or deserted your fastidious moisturising routine, this vitamin-packed bad boy is the one for you. Aesop's Chief Customer Officer, Suzanne Santos, divulges further on its exceptional abilities, standout qualities, and more.

How would you say an overnight mask differs from, let's say, a moisturiser?
Each of our hydrating formulations works to counterbalance the effects of dehydrating conditions, but Sublime Replenishing Night Masque has been specifically formulated to strengthen the skin's barrier function in order to promote moisture retention while delivering a number of skin-supportive vitamins in concentrated quantities. This makes it an excellent product to leave on skin overnight when skin is dry, dehydrated, dull or patchy, or where a nourishing boost is required.

Sublime Replenishing Night Masque has been formulated with a considered blend of skin-supportive vitamins alongside ingredients known for their hydrating and emollient properties, including Sodium Carrageenan and Squalane, which combine to offer sustained hydration with a soft, non-greasy finish while helping to nourish, replenish and support the skin. This formulation epitomises our philosophy of supporting the health and integrity of the skin.

On the other hand, how does it differ from sheet masks?
Sublime Replenishing Night Masque was conceived as an alternative to disposable sheet masks — in some ways, it's the Aesop version of this widely enjoyed but single-use product. However, we are committed to improving the environmental impact of our own packaging components. From our earliest days, we've sought to tread as lightly as possible, and to use packaging that is both simple and functional, with minimal waste.

Sustainability remains a vital consideration in all we do, particularly when it comes to product development. And so, after weighing up various packaging options during the development of Sublime Replenishing Night Masque, we decided that a recyclable glass jar would be the ideal vessel to house the formulation. It's a more environmentally friendly option than single-use plastic sachets, and contains adequate product for many applications.

I hear the Sublime Replenishing Night Masque is a part of Aesop Skin Care + range. Tell me more about that.
Our Skin Care+ formulations are distinguished by their generous vitamin content. As a group, they're particularly suited to nourishing mature, dull, patchy or fatigued skin-and countering the effects of a life well-lived. The range comprises four other products: Lucent Facial Concentrate, Perfect Facial Hydrating Cream, Damascan Rose Facial Treatment and B Triple C Facial Balancing Gel.

Who would you say the Aesop Sublime Replenishing Night Masque is most suitable for?
It is suitable for use in all climates and on a range of skin types — it has a lightweight, comforting texture, and will benefit all skin in need of added nourishment. I'd say it's particularly well suited to those with normal to very dry skin; mature, dull, patchy or fatigued skin; or those given to dehydration, such as office workers and frequent travellers.

What was a key skin concern you guys were looking to address when you guys came up with the Sublime Replenishing Night Masque?
This is our first vitamin-enriched masque developed specifically for overnight use. We were chiefly interested in a formulation that would confer generous doses of vitamins in addition to immediate and sustained hydration — a product that could be applied in the evening, and leave skin feeling smooth, supple and balanced come morning.

Did you guys experience any difficulties when developing the formula for the Sublime Replenishing Night Masque?
One of the challenges we faced was that Vitamin C — one of four key vitamins incorporated into the masque — is renowned for its ability to destabilise emulsions and serums, and so it must be handled very delicately. This, combined with our desire to incorporate meaningful levels of skin-nourishing emollients, meant that we needed to explore a different base formula to that used in Blue Chamomile Facial Hydrating Masque — that is, a base sensitive to the presence of any level of Vitamin C.

We arrived at a combination of an Olive-based emulsifying agent and various stabilising polymers which yielded a highly stable product with a light yet cushiony skin-feel, delivering the hydration and nourishment sought for Sublime Replenishing Night Masque. The result is a product of exceptional hydrating ability. On initial application, the skin feels nourished and comforted, with a cushiony feel. Thirty minutes post-application, following initial absorption, the product has a refined, matte finish.

Would you recommend it for daily use?
We recommend Sublime Replenishing Night Masque in complement to your existing suite of daily-use hydrating products — once to twice weekly, or as needed to boost hydration and balance skin. Apply generously to the face and neck after cleansing and toning, as this is when your skin is optimally prepared to take in hydration. For best results, leave on the skin overnight, and rinse off in the morning during routine cleansing.

What's next in the works with regard to product development for Aesop?
We work with the aim of developing and launching formulations according to need, or customers' requests. We have a number of new products planned for the next twelve months, and look forward to sharing these with our customers in the not-too-distant future.

The Aesop Sublime Replenishing Night Masque will be available at all Aesop boutiques and online on 24 August.
