Valentino does makeup, Naomi Osaka’s upcoming skincare line, and other beauty news
1. Maison Valentino will be dropping their very own makeup.
Come August 2021, you'll be able to get your paws on Valentino lipsticks; foundations; and numerous eye products in various textures and hues. Neat. Described as "couture makeup open to all genders, ages, and cultures," all goods are also said to be housed in visually stunning and refillable packaging. It will make its grand debut in a special campaign shot by Creative Director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, and will feature "16 eclectic talents" that epitomises "a shade of Valentino." Colour us (ha) intrigued. Pre-orders will begin online from 1 June, so get to saving up some coin in the meantime.
2. Naomi Osaka will be launching skincare... sometime soon.
Here's what we've gathered, so far: the range will be SPF-focused, the products are specifically crafted for people of colour, and it is named Kinló so as to pay homage to Osaka's Japanese and Haitian roots — with both "kin" and "lo" translating to "gold" in said respective languages. The first drop will comprise a tinted SPF 40 moisturiser with added blue-light protection; a SPF 50 moisturiser; a protective body spray; a lip balm; and an eye cream. Talk about a comprehensive selection, alright. Watch this space for more updates.
3. Selena Gomez goes blonde.
Yeah, we didn't see this coming either. The Selfish Love singer debuted the new 'do via Rare Beauty's Instagram; the makeup label she set up in 2020. According to her go-to hairstylists, Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri, Gomez's mane was a huge undertaking that required "200 foils, several bowls of bleach, and eight hours of hair magic." Eep. We foresee that she'll be sticking to this new colour for a good long while, then. Speaking of surprises...
4. Kim K has partnered up with someone outside the Kardashian-Jenner clan to release a fragrance.
Does the name Jeff Leatham ring any bells? Apparently, the floral-artisan has been designing flowers for the family for years — which made him an apt choice for KKW Fragrance's latest collection. Their collective vision translates to three scents titled Jasmine Air, Desert Rose, and Night Iris; parfums described as "chic, minimalistic, and elegant."
5. Martin Scorsese is on beauty TikTok.
The award-winning film director was featured on his daughter's video — the first of many, if her title is anything to go by - where she got him to identify the functions of various feminine items. This resulted in some hilarious assumptions with regard to menstrual cups and nipple pasties, though it seems Scorsese did correctly identify a Beauty Blender. Nice. We'll be waiting with bated breath for more parts to this thrilling saga.
6. Cardi B has trademarked Bardi Beauty.
Yup, it's official. And unlike previous reports, Bardi Beauty won't just include hair care products. According to Dazed Digital, the copyright covers makeup, fragrance, skincare, hair and nail products, so it's likely that you'll be able to adorn your entire mien and body with Cardi-approved goods. Fingers crossed we hear more about it soon.
7. The Oscars made history by issuing the best makeup and hair styling award to two Black women.
Not only are Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson the first Black women nominated for an Oscar, they were also the first to win the category. This was for their work in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, where they were tasked to transform Viola Davis into the titular Ma Rainey. Both parties delivered touching acceptance speeches during the ceremony, sharing their hopes with women of colour that such recognition "won't be unusual or groundbreaking" in the future. If anything, "it will just be normal." Preach.
