The freshest makeup looks at Cannes

Modern miracles

Text: Renée Batchelor

Proving that red carpet makeup doesn't have to be overdone, these starlets dazzled with their understated looks

The makeup at Cannes proved to be as fresh as the blue skies above the Croisette this year. Some of our favourite actresses proved that natural skin and playing up just one feature was the way to go. Lea Seydoux perfectly channelled French girl charm in understated iridescent shades while Emma Stone looked fabulously fresh-faced at her photocall for The Irrational Man — before the wind caught her unawares. Even when the makeup went slightly more dramatic, like when style blogger Nicole Warne used both liquid liner and wine-coloured lips, the skin was kept fresh — Warne bared her freckles — to avoid looking too 'done'.  The lesson here? Dial down the makeup to look more youthful and infinitely more glamorous.
