Kiehl’s Love Oil for Lips is reminiscent of all our favourite things from the ‘90s
As with anything that has once sparked joy within us — our ex, our first paying job, or TV shows with 15 season runs à la Supernatural — it can be deceptively easy to view them through rose-tinted lenses. Nostalgia is a hard-hitter, folks, especially with the temptation of simpler times dangling over our heads.
With no news on an impending time machine though, it is probably best that we just keep trucking on — and indulge in the occasional reminder when the need arises, of course. Thankfully, we are nowhere short in that department with the resurgence of everything '90s from TV shows (see: Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboots), to fashion (bike shorts and bucket hats), to beauty (glitter and hair accessories galore).
The latest addition to the movement? Kiehl's Love Oil for Lips, a non-sticky lip treatment contained within a squeeze tube packaging reminiscent of various childhood staples from our favourite decade. To say we're delighted by the discovery is an understatement. Below, a rundown of our favourite '90s memorabilia that bear an uncanny resemblance to said lip product.
1. Glow sticks
An essential to the concert-going experience, they also double as bracelets and necklaces for the inventive (a.k.a. the chronically broke whose parents refused to buy them Diva jewellery).
2. Push Pop candy
LBR: those rainbow push pop cake-inspired confections are nothing compared to the OG Push Pop candy. Not only can you lick 'em, cap'em, and save 'em, they also served as make-shift lipsticks for those banned from going through mum's stash. Ah, cheap thrills.
3. Frozen jelly sticks
At just ten cents a pop, this used to be the ultimate after-school snack for us Tweedledee primary schoolers. Major points if you managed to get the jelly out in one sweep instead of having to experiment with multiple trajectories like the rest of us plebs.
4. Sticky Hands
The jelly texture of Kiehl's Love Oil for Lips is a dead giveaway for everyone's favourite party favour. We're still convinced that Akon's "Smack That" circa 2006 was inspired by this very toy.
5. Squeezy Lip Smacker
To be fair, we spent most of our time licking them off our lips rather than letting them get any moisturising done.
In this case, history does not repeat itself with Kiehl's offering. Formulated with a luxurious blend of coconut oil, moringa oil, and acerola cherry extract, Kiehl’s Love Oil for Lips is also available in five irresistible shades slated to make your pucker look and feel glorious. Now, who's going to risk eating it off with incentives like these?
