John Boyega quits his Jo Malone ambassador role, Michelle Obama launches a lipstick, and other beauty news
1. John Boyega resigns as Jo Malone's Global Brand Ambassador.
The Star Wars actor took to Twitter to break the news, explaining that his decision to step down stems from the brand's recent ad campaign in China. It featured "similar visual elements" to the short film Boyega conceived and directed for Jo Malone, except it was reshot with Chinese actor, Liu Haron, without his consent or prior notice. "While many brands understandably use a variety of global and local ambassadors, dismissively trading out one's culture this way is not something I can condone," Boyega wrote.
2. Michelle Obama released a lipstick for a good cause.
Dubbed Bawse Voter, this limited edition lippie was made in collaboration with The Lip Bar; a vegan, cruelty-free, and Black-owned label. 40% of the proceeds will go to non-profit organisation, When We All Vote, so they can exert their efforts to increase voter participation in the upcoming U.S. elections. This will be done through disseminating frequent text reminders, providing online resources, and more.
3. Valentino expands into the beauty sector.
Not much else has been revealed save that Lady Gaga will be the face of their latest Voce Viva fragrance. The luxury fashion house has, however, created an official Instagram account (@valentino.beauty) and already has a catchy bio up declaring that "beauty means love and love is beauty." Intriguing, alright.
4. Elle Fanning celebrates eczema with her latest selfie.
While Fanning has never openly discussed her diagnosis, she opted to show off her latest flare-up instead of concealing it in a series of selfies. "Eczema, but make it eyeshadow," she wrote; a reference to the pinked, inflamed skin stretching over her eyelids. This prompted an outpouring of support for Fanning, including actress Rachel Brosnahan who later commented, "I feel seen."
5. Mario Dedivanovic confirms a launch date for his makeup brand.
You might recognise him as Kim K's go-to MUA and trusted confidant. Beginning 1 October, he, too, will be adding beauty mogul to his resumé. The full line-up will be available via Sephora, though it remains to be seen what products Mario Dedivanovic Beauty will include. Might we make a wild guess and say... makeup?
6. Glossier drops a new Boy Brow shade.
To say this release has been a long-time coming is an understatement. The brand has finally dropped their iconic brow tint in the shade, Auburn, a medium-cinnamon hue perfect for natural redheads. As one user so aptly puts it, "would be great if you were to ship to the rest of the world Xx." Word.
7. BeautyBlender is now doing makeup brushes.
Except they do more than just apply your makeup on flawlessly. Named The Detailers, the collection comprises five cruelty-free, vegan brushes — three of which are dual-ended that comes with a cooling zamac face roller on the other end. Yes, this means you can use these bad boys to beat your face and indulge in your skincare routine after removal. How convenient.
8. Madison Beer teams up with Morphe for a new makeup collection.
Expect eyeshadow palettes, lip glosses, and highlighters that make it easy for users to re-create the singer's signature "soft-glam" look. Her 30-pan artistry palette, Channel Surfing, is already garnering mixed reviews, with some claiming it "versatile" and others "forgettable." Eep.
