Garden of Eden

Text: Emily Heng

True miracles are few and far in between. As it should be, for it is defined as an extraordinary event or effect that surpasses all known human or natural powers; a phenomenon that loses gravitas should it occur on the daily. Acceptable (and apt) usage of the term comprises instances such as weeping statues, the discovery of life on Mars, and the growth of an enclosed, secret garden right in the heart of the City of Water: Venice.

Named the Garden of Eden, it sprung into existence after an English lord, Frederic Eden, expressed his desire to see an enclosed oasis of green in the midst of the various bodies of water in Venice; a haven filled with fragrant blooms on the shore of a lagoon, set under a sunlit blue sky. For years it stayed undisclosed, until Hermès perfumer, Christine Nagel, stumbled upon the story, therewith inspiring her to shape a scent, Hermès Un Jardin sur la Lagune, capturing the essence of the garden.

It is an olfactory delight that permeates the air with woody notes, sea wind, as well as Madonna lilies and magnolias — a complex bouquet of sky, flowers and sea housed in a single bottle. Sweet though not cloying, one would consider Un Jardin sur la Lagune a true classic meant to survive time — much like the space it is named after.

Hermès Un Jardin sur la Lagune is available in 30ml ($96), 50ml ($139) and 100ml ($196), at Hermès boutiques at Liat Towers, Takashimaya and The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
