Coming into prominence late 2016, highlighters cannonballed onto the beauty scene alongside bronzers, contour sticks, and matte lip formulas. And while some might credit its popularity to the Kardashian-Jenner clan — unsurprising, considering how the offerings above read like the inventory of both KKW and Kylie Cosmetics — the film industry has been championing them since the early 2000s.

Highlighters, in particular, are heavily utilised — then and now — so as to mimic the effects of sunlight reflecting off an actor's cheekbones, nose and jawline. Translation: constantly flattering, selfie-ready lighting without depending on the whims of the flaming ball of gas in the sky.

Highlighting shows no signs of slowing down in 2019, with newfangled formulations, finishes, and hues hitting the market to riotous fanfare. Below, the best of the bunch that we've added to our (already) bursting-at-the-seams stash.

1. Fenty Beauty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter in PENNY4UTHOTS
Everyone's favourite hyper-metallic highlighter is now available in the burnt copper shade seen all over this season's runway. Not for the faint of heart, we recommend doing as Queen RiRi does: dust it across the tops of cheeks, along the brow bone towards the temple, and from the temple up to the brow arch. With the pigment on this baby, we'd say that's all the shine (and luminosity) you'll need. Blush and brightening foundations need not apply.

2. Charlotte Tilbury Glowgasm Face Palette in Lovegasm
The palette is officially hitting shelves on 2 May, though we suspect it might not stay there for long judging from the hype generated from the sneak peeks alone. Comprising three wearable highlighting shades in glimmering gold, rose gold, and peachy pink, the quad also comes with a single bronzer to grant the sun-kissed, glowing skin of dreams in one fell swoop.

3. Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Face
Those looking for an understated shimmer rather than a blinding sheen are sure to appreciate this dewy, glossy formulation that offers a glass-like effect to complexions. The watery texture goes on easily and diffuses with just a few taps of the finger for an even, all-over glow. Choose from three varying shades of bronze, blush, and pearl.

4. Jeffree Star Liquid Frost Highlighter in Frostitute, Ice Cream Bling, and Blue Balls
Jeffree Star meant business when he said these bad boys were highly pigmented. A single swipe is all you need to get a serious lit-from-within glow, though it should be noted that it is crucial to blend immediately once applied; its budge-proof nature makes it impossible upon drying down otherwise. Available in five new frosty shades, it is definitely the furthest thing from subtle.

5. Colourpop Loose Pigment
The brand has recently added 12 new hues to their range from metallic to intense neon that can be swiped on to the cheeks, lips, eyes, and more. To use, wet your brush and slide it on to the desired area. Also, they won't break the bank, a fact only sweetened by its wide range.

6. YSL Beauté Touche Éclat Shimmer Stick Highlighter

This multi-purpose highlighter glides onto skin to grant instant radiance and luminosity, with its innovative stick-packaging allowing for easy on-the-go application and touch-ups for both face and body. Available in five diverse — and versatile — hues of gold, pink and bronze, Touche Éclat Shimmer Stick Highlighter can even be doubled-up as a blush and a bronzer to boot.

7. NudeStix Magnetic Nude Glimmers

This shimmering gel can be swiped onto the eyes and lips alongside cheekbones. NudeStix's latest offering — available in three get-outta-here glows — also comes equipped with waterproof and sweatproof abilities for a shine that doesn't fade despite our relentless humidity.
