Best men’s skincare routine: Everything to know about acquiring — and maintaining — a clear, smooth complexion

Chances are, there is something about your skin you'd like to change for the better. Whether it's banishing those designer eye bags or brightening a sallow, tired complexion, it's probably an issue weighing on you for a while, now — with what seems like no conceivable solution in sight.

Except, of course, there is. Welcome to the big, wide world of skincare. This hallowed space can be intimidating for the newly initiated, so let us break down the beauty lexicon for ya. First thing's first: to get you started on the right foot, a straightforward beauty regimen to grant a thriving complexion in 2020. Let's get down to it, shall we?

Step 1: Cleanser

We hate to break it to you, but water doesn't actually do much in terms of sloughing off dirt and impurities. Much like how it feels like you haven't showered until you've lathered up with your shower gel/bar soap/three-in-one wash, same goes for your mien. Essentially: It's not properly cleansed until a good face wash comes into play.

It's best if you can pick one according to your skin type, but should that be too complicated a process, we say opt for a gentle option that contains hyaluronic acid (to hydrate dry, flaky areas) and salicylic acid (to keep oil levels in check). We like this one by Aesop, which is safe for use when it comes to even the most sensitive, finicky of complexions. Use it morning and evening, and be sure to rinse it off thoroughly after.

Step 2: Moisturiser

Think of your moisturiser as an all-in-one skin saviour. Dry, flaking skin? Moisturise. Wrinkles, crow's feet, and lines? Moisturise. Zits the side of volcanic craters? Dab on a spot treatment gel, then moisturise after to ensure a soft, smooth complexion. Gel and water types are your best bet considering Singapore's climate, absorbing quickly into skin so you won't feel any lingering stickiness or tackiness after.

Apply twice a day, once in the morning before heading out and at night before going to bed. This one by The Inkey List comes at a wallet-friendly price and helps combat typical signs of ageing thanks to its blend of nourishing omega-3 rich Inchi oil and squalene.

Step 3: SPF

At this point, we've heard just about every excuse under the sun (ha) as to why men won't put on sunscreen. Still, we'll like to point out that that the consequences of going out and about without SPF protection is a lot more far-reaching than a measly sunburn. We're talking sun spots, ageing, and, yes, even skin cancer.

So, slather up, folks. With the advancements in technology these days, we guarantee that there is one that fits your (extensive) requirements. From what we know, the lads in our lives are a fan of the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40. No white-cast, lightweight, and with a faint scent that diminishes within minutes of application.
