Get the look: Here’s how to achieve the sultry eye makeup from the Dior women’s SS21 runway show
With mask mandates still going strong, we've only got half the canvas to work with when it comes to makeup. Therefore, it falls onto our peepers to make a statement — after all, your eyes are supposed to be the 'windows to your soul' (according to William Shakespeare, at least). We're seeing an uptick trend in makeup that plays up the eyes, and things was certainly no different at Dior's Spring Summer 2021 show, where Dior's Creative and Image Director, Peter Philips, set the season's motif on intensifying the eyes with a sultry, bold look. "I wanted to focus on the eyes and emphasise them powerfully by framing them with very dense, matte black liner," Philips tells us. Looking to nail the look? Below, the makeup virtuoso shares with us his technique on creating the Cleopatra-esque façade.
The perfect eye base with Dior 5 Couleurs Couture 649 Nude Dress Palette
Start off by swiping on a base colour atop your lids to help make those peepers pop. "To draw the attention to the eyes, I used the 5 Couleurs Couture 649 Nude Dress Palette to subtly shade the upper eyelid," Philips shares.
The intense emphasis with Diorshow 24H Stylo 091 Matte Black, Diorshow Iconic Overcurl 090 Black Mascara
"To create a strong graphic look, I traced an emphatic line of eyeliner along the upper and lower lash lines, using Diorshow 24H Stylo 091 Matte Black, but without stretching it at the outer corner of the eye," says Philips. "The line is balanced, neither thin nor thick, but it literally frames the eyes by intensifying them and by 'dramatising' them." Afterwards, Philips further dramatizes the eyes with coats of the Diorshow Iconic Overcurl 090 Black Mascara.
The fluffy brows with Diorshow Brow Styler and Diorshow Pump'N'Brow
Don't neglect your brows! With such distinction set on the eyes, the attention will naturally be drawn to your brows as well. "I then worked on the eyebrows with a light touch of Diorshow Brow Styler and Diorshow Pump'N'Brow, so that they looked natural while adding structure to the eyes," Philips elaborates.
The skin prep with the Dior Capture Totale C.E.L.L. Energy line
To place prominence on the eyes, Philips kept the complexion au naturale. He starts by prepping and hydrating the skin with Dior's Capture Totale C.E.L.L. Energy Super Potent Serum, followed by the Firming and Wrinkle-Correcting Crème.
The flawless complexion with Dior Backstage Face & Body Primer, Face & Body Foundation, Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer
Philips then focused on creating a pristine base. "I applied Dior Backstage Face & Body Primer 001 Universal, which blurs flaws and ensures perfect wear for the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation, with shades chosen to match each skin tone. Lastly, I used Dior Forever Skin Correct for subtle touch-ups."
The natural pout with Dior Lip Sugar Scrub, Dior Lip Maximizer
For a smooth, subtle pucker, Philips uses the Dior Lip Sugar Scrub 001 Pink to soften and exfoliate the lips. He then swipes on a hint of colour with the Dior Lip Maximizer 001 Pink, with the shine blotted.
The straightforward finish with nails and hair
Nails were coated with Dior Vernis Muguet for a natural, glossy finish. Philips kept the models' natural hairstyles while preening some with headscarves or headbands with small veils.
