Some makeup styles are trickier to execute than others. The most high-risk of them all: black eyeshadow. Once sported exclusively by goths, punks, and uh, Taylor Momsen (of Gossip Girl and The Pretty Reckless, anyone?), it is refashioned — literally — in 2019 by Peter Phillips, Creative and Image Director of Dior Makeup.

"The eyes are surrounded with a smoky halo that is both soft and intense," he explains, which serves as the perfect complement to the elegant, dark-hued silhouettes sent down the Dior Haute Couture FW19 runway. "It's a look of modern purity, subtly worked with simplicity." The end result, an update on deep, smoky eye makeup, is striking yet surprisingly wearable — a far cry from the harsh, kohl-smeared trappings from years past.

Here’s how you can recreate Phillips’ masterpiece.

The ink-black lids, with Dior 3 Couleurs Tri(o)blique 053 Smoky Canvas Palette

This limited edition palette carries a trio of highly pigmented grey and black hues that blend like a dream. Go easy; a little goes a long way. According to Phillips, simply dust the upper eyelids with a light coat before running the brush along the lash lines of the lower eyelids for a weightless look and feel. Option: skip the mascara to accentuate the delicate corners of the eyes.

The defined brows, with Diorshow Brow Styler and the Diorshow Pump 'N' Brow

For defined, shaped brows, start with the Diorshow Brow Styler. Its angled, defined tip allows for precise application, with the highly blendable formula — and attached spoolie — filling in bare spots effortlessly. Phillips recommends topping it off with the Diorshow Pump 'N' Brow, an instantly volumising brow mascara that coats sparse arches for the appearance of fuller, thicker brows.

The dewy complexion, with Dior Backstage Face & Body Primer, the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation, and more

Clear, almost translucent skin plays a big role in this look, as ascertained by Phillips. He kicks things off with the Dior Backstage Face & Body Primer to brighten, plump, and hydrate skin — creating a perfect base for makeup application. A fine layer of the waterproof, sweat-resistant, and high-coverage Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation comes next for a natural yet glowing complexion. For additional luminosity, opt for the Dior Flash Luminizer, a light-booster and concealer that sculpts the face and illuminates shadowy areas simultaneously. Once everything is on, seal that hard work with the Dior Forever & Ever Control Loose Powder, which promises a matte, shine-free visage for hours. A quick swipe of subtle lip-enhancing gloss, the Dior Lip Maximizer, should be your final touch. Voila!
