Buro. Beauty Club Singapore: Our thoughts on Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eye Palette in Cherrific
November is upon us. Or, as we like to call it, the awkward, transitional period between Halloween and Christmas; a time which heralds the arrival of an age-old struggle: stick to the spooky face paint, or move on to red-and-green pastures? Should we declare out with the terrifying talons, and in with the ribbon-adorned digits? Are we officially kicking the good ol' glue stick and colourful wigs to the curb? Not likely. This 2020, we've elected to embody the spirit of both holidays — that is, by testing out Marc Jacobs Beauty's latest cherry-inspired eyeshadow palette. After all, ruby-dusted lids can go both ways, serving as a reminder of the bloodied mien you sported in October or a tribute to Santa's vibrant threads. The real question is: will MJB's eyeshadow formula make this monumental task easier, or fail us entirely? Our unfiltered thoughts, below.

I'm hardly the type to judge a book by its cover, though exceptions are made when I'm offered something quite this striking. Its slim mint-green exterior fit perfectly into my tiny clutch; an ideal choice for on-the-go touch-ups during party season. Still, I'd highly doubt you'd experience much need for re-application — the dusty pink hues I opted for stayed on throughout a night of drinking in Singapore's relentless humidity. And yes, this was without primer, I might add. I was also pleasantly surprised by how easily my brush picked up on the lone metallic shade, Cherries, where it dispensed a good amount of sparkle on my lids with no fallout in the hours that passed. Eyeshadow beginners, I recommend steering clear of darker hues such as Extra, Cherries, and On Top, though — finesse is required in carefully blending out these highly-pigmented shadows so you won't draw raccoon comparisons.

I can't stress how important it is that my eyeshadows blend well. No one wants to deal with chunky, uneven blocks of colour — which, luckily, wasn't an issue I faced with this palette. I used my go-to brushes, and managed to do up a decent eye look within 10 minutes. Personally, I'm a fan of the shade combinations here. It has a good range of neutral tones that makes it easy for beginners to play with, and also vibrant ones so maestros can get creative. A crowd-pleaser, indeed. I can't say I can attest to its longevity, though, seeing how I don't have oily lids and spend most of time working in an air-conditioned environment.

The Marc Jacobs Beauty eyeshadow palette was surprising, to say the least. As a makeup newbie, I initially baulked at having to try my hand at pink and red shadows. And yet, I found it pretty easy to use. Upon a closer look, I realised that the colours weren't too wild but was still versatile enough that I could experiment and play. I started applying it with my fingers, but then opted for a brush to gain a more even consistency over the lids. It blended really nicely, and was easily removed with a makeup remover wipe. Kudos for that — because there's nothing more annoying than having to deal with a makeup-flecked, stained face in the days after.

I normally don't lean to bolder shades like this but this palette is amazing! I found it a little subtle upon first swatch, but discovered that you can build on it easily to achieve your desired look. Another plus is that I didn't experience any fallout either — yes, and that's with the glitters, too. There's a nice variation of hues in this palette to take you from a day at work to a night out, too, so I'm definitely making this a permanent fixture in my work bag from now on.
Its daring, cherry-red lineup might have fooled you into thinking this is one for the professionals, but as it turns out, this truly is a palette for the masses. Paired with a budge-proof formula alongside buttery blendability and you have an instant classic on your hands. We'll be donning this through November, December, and the months beyond — as will the rest of the beauty community once they catch on, probably.
