Buro. Beauty Club Singapore: Can Benefit Cosmetics’ California Kissin’ ColourBalm deliver on both vivid pigment and hydration?
In the excitement that is impeding National Day festivities; the re-emergence of Singapore's drive-in cinema; and the launch of Virgil Abloh's activewear line, it's likely you missed out the momentous occasion that is National Lipstick Day (29 July). Still, that's not to say you shouldn't celebrate your favourite pigment-packed sticks. We at Buro. Singapore are all about making our own rules, after all —because who's to let a calendar stipulate when, where, or how we commemorate good ol' rouge? Maybe you could bust out that bold hue hidden at the bottom of your makeup bag, or pick up a new shade whilst shopping. As for us, we'll be partying it up with Benefit's latest lip offering, the California Kissin' Colourbalm. Here's everything you need to know, below.

I thought I had the Benefit Colourbalm pegged the second I heard about it. Hydrating and nourishing were the most highly-mentioned buzzwords surrounding the offering, so that meant soft, kissable puckers... with little-to-no colour payoff. Fair's fair, right? As someone who's tried hordes of lippies over the years, I had long given-up on acquiring one that ticks all my boxes — i.e. long-lasting, moisturising, and pigmented. So, you can imagine my surprise when the first swipe of Benefit's balm produced a bold swath of colour over my pout. I donned it for the duration of the work day and experienced close to zero chapping or flakiness. It did, however, fade off by the third hour and after a particularly grease-laden meal, which is to be expected. But hey, two out of three ain't bad.

It was right before my daily morning Zoom calls when I decided to whip out Benefit's Colourbalm to help me look presentable (at least from the waist up). In just one swipe I felt it was pulling its weight. I loved how lightweight it was without the feeling of having 'make-up' on and the intensity of the pigment. I prefer a matte finish, so I just dabbed it across my lips to get the effect I wanted. It survived copious amounts of water, coffee and smoothies, sticking it out like a true friend. The hydration it provided was most impressive, too — I found the mango butter and hyaluronic acid in the formula made this a definite winner in my books. Oh, and unlike other balms, it didn't feel overly greasy, oily or sticky after application.

I was really pleased to discover that this was highly similar to the classic Benefit Cheek & Lip Stain! It's a personal favourite of mine, where I find it really vibrant and easy-to-wear. The Benefit Colourbalm inherits this, though it does move around a lot more when eating. I won't consider it a deal-breaker, though, especially since this one has more of a cushiony-balm texture. I also like that it's easier to remove — just a few swipes of a micellar-soaked cotton pad will do the trick — as compared to the budge-proof stain.

Lipstick is just one of those makeup items that I haven't worn in a while, now, so I was pretty unused to the Benefit balm at first. The fact that its lightweight did ease that transition for me, though, and I soon forgot that I had anything on in the first place. Personally, I like how it's a glossier, satin finish, because of how forgiving it is. Messing up with a matte-finish lipstick means I have to spend forever dabbing it away with a makeup remover wipe — this one requires just a quick slide of my finger. All the touch-ups in the world are worth it.
In sum: this is one heck of a lip balm. You get the most when it comes to colour and hydration, but do note that it is lacking in terms of longevity. Combat this by bringing it out with you for ease of touch-ups —a non-issue, really, seeing its portability and practical packaging.
