Best makeup looks in K-pop 2020: Blackpink, Somi, Red Velvet, etc
You don't have to be well-versed in all things K-pop to recognise the makings of a big hit. Usually, it entails infectious beats, slick choreography, and one hell of an interesting video concept. As of late, though, we've noticed yet another commonality amongst said chart-toppers: makeup. That is, one-of-a-kind, inventive beauty looks filling the Euphoria-shaped hole in our hearts. From dagger-entwined locks to bedazzled lids, here are the ones we're itching to emulate.
Blackpink, How You Like That: Gems, gems erry'where
It's all about face jewellery for Blackpink's highly-anticipated return. From subtle accents to Jennie's, uh, full-on danglers, there's a style suited for every personality in the short three-minute video. To get the look, make sure you have a trustworthy adhesive on hand. The general consensus is that lash glue is your best bet. As for placement, opt for tweezers to get them right where you want 'em.
Celebrity makeup artist, Nick Barose, disclosed his technique in an interview with Refinery29. "I try to wipe the spot with cotton swabs dipped in cleansing water first, this way, the gems can stick with eyelash glue," Barose instructs. "Be sure whatever you use underneath is not greasy, so that it sticks all night — and it should if you glue it well!"
Somi, What You Waiting For: Graphic glitter lids and standout hair
We love a good '80s moment. And what better way to express that than with literal disco ball lids? The addition of tiny kitten flicks gives the classic look a modern twist, furthermore when it is paired with loose locks and a nude lip.
And that's far from the most surprising — or innovative — look from Somi's video. Might we present sword hair, where a dagger is cleverly looped through half-up strands. Talk about a killer way to get people to practice social distancing, right? You might, however, struggle to get your hands on an ornamental dagger, but, well, technicalities.
Irene & Seulgi, Monster: Statement smudged lids and lips
You might recognise them as member of the saccharine-sweet K-Pop girl group, Red Velvet. This time, though, they're veering away from their signature style and have arrived upon a darker, edgier route. Seulgi's smudged, Black Swan-inspired wings are what we're going to don the next time we experience searing hot weather. Hey, it's not your makeup melting off when it's a deliberate style choice, right?
An onyx pout ain't just for Halloween anymore. We like how Seulgi has opted for a feathered, velvet option rather than matte — the latter proves challenging, application-wise, so take a leaf from her book and go for a satin pick. Lipstick newbies, try Gucci Beauty's Rouge à Levres Satin Lipstick in 700 Crystal Black for size.
Sunmi, pporappipam: Purple lids paired with silver accents
A light sweep of ultraviolet eyeshadow over your lids is all you need to get striking peepers. Not one to shy from colour, we appreciate the fact that Sunmi has forgone the versatile nude lip for ruby-red instead.
For those who are looking for something with a tad more pizzazz, there's also the option of adding hints of silver to your look. Sunmi makes a case for both glitter flecks and metallic arcs.
