It's indisputable that diet and exercise as well as the desire to  adopt a healthier lifestyle are high on the list of many individuals in a bid to gain a leaner and slimmer body. But many of us lack motivation, and the know-how on how to successfully achieve our goals, and often we need a kickstart inthe right direction. What should you consider? Going to a professional for your body sculpting and fat reduction needs so you are on the right track.

First, you need to determine what your problem areas and goals are, and which is the right option for you. There is a big difference between general weight loss and targeted fat loss, that many people fail to understand. Says Dr. Ivan Puah, the medical director of Amaris B. Clinic, "Treatment for weight loss and targeted fat loss are very different. When you lose weight, you will lose both fat and muscles simultaneously. At the same time, the rate at which different parts of your body burns through fat is different as well. For example, one may lose more fat from unexpected areas such as the breasts rather than from 'stubborn' areas like the hips when one starts to lose weight."
If you have specific problem areas such as bat wings on the upper arms or a particularly stubborn belly pouch, weight loss alone may not be the right option. Dr. Ivan Puah elaborates, "On the other hand, targeted fat loss treatment may improve one's body shape, but may not have significant impact on one's body weight. It is very important for me to understand the concerns of each patient so that I can advise them on the types of treatment required to help them achieve the desired results."

As a general rule, Dr. Puah says there are several factors that you should consider. "What treatment plan we choose will depend on whether the patient wishes to lose weight or hopes to improve their body size or shape. Other factors include the amount of localised fat the patient has that he or she hopes to lose, the amount of downtime the patient can or cannot afford to have, the physical health of the patient and the types of treatment options that match the patient's expectations."

If you haven't really committed to an exercise programme then you may want to start with the basics. Tired of literally (and figuratively) running around in circles or doing gym exercises without a sense of direction? There are more effective fat loss options such as HYPOXI® that combines moderate exercise and patented technology to aid 3 times targeted fat loss in specific areas such as the buttocks, waist, tummy and thighs, as compared to conventional exercise.

You will still be putting in the effort, but you will be aided in your fat loss goals by a specific training programme that is tailored to your body shape by the HYPOXI® coaches. What you can look forward to is effective fat burn and faster results.

Fad diets and off-the-shelf slimming pills are a dangerous and unproductive way to slim down. The best and safest course is to undergo a doctor-approved weight loss programme.

At Amaris B. Clinic, their weight loss program usually starts with a consultation with Dr. Ivan Puah, and a detailed body analysis, and may include other helping factors like a tailored fitness programme, meal management as well as FDA-approved weight loss medication. This holistic approach will result in a much higher success rate, than if you attempt weight loss on your own through fad diets and intermittent exercise.

Improvements in technology have yielded minimally-invasive versions like VASER Liposelection (also known as VASER Lipo) that don't require you to go under the knife in the traditional sense, or even to stay in hospital. This is great for targeted areas such as the fat cells in the abdomen, back, chin and the thighs, without disturbing the important tissues like the nerves, blood, vessels and connective tissues.

"Minimally invasive treatment like VASER Lipo is suited for body sculpting and targeted fat reduction. It will help patients to shape and improve targeted body areas which they fail to achieve with exercise," says Dr Puah. If you are already pretty trim and lean, but want even more definition, there is another form of Vaser Liposuction that can help. "There is also the option of VASER Hi-Def Lipo, an advanced method of contouring  the body to highlight the natural anatomical features. For instance, it can help patients to achieve a better sculpted abdomen or 'six-packs abs'. VASER Hi-Def Lipo is specifically suited for physically fit patients with lean body shapes." And you don't have to worry about the permanence of these procedure. Dr Puah confirms, "Localised fat loss from VASER Lipo is usually permanent. The treated areas will have permanently reduced fat layers even if the patients gain weight in future." These treatments are also good options for patients who don't respond well to less invasive procedures like fat freezing (or cryolipolysis).

A problem that is not often talked about, but is pretty common is gynecomastia, or enlarged breast tissue in men. Again, there are misconceptions about this condition, and it is not something that only happens to men who are overweight. It can also afflict even fit and well-built men. Furthermore, this is not just an aesthetic issue, but a medical one, brought about by excess breast tissue (such as swollen glands) in the chest area.

The only real solution for this issue is gynecomastia surgery to remove and reduce the amount of excess fat and overly enlarged glandular tissues, while defining the chest so it has a more masculine appearance. If gynecomastia has been a bane in your life and prevented you from wearing tight shirts or even going swimming, do yourself a big favour and make an appointment with a trained doctor to address this issue.
