Meet Olivia Thorpe, the skincare founder who's been blending face oils and serums from home
Speaking of productivity...
If you've nosedived into the world of clean beauty, you'll definitely be acquainted with this brand –– Vanderohe. Founded by the London-based Olivia Thorpe who formerly gave up her career in investment banking to set up the then clean beauty publication, Vanderohe.com, Thorpe eventually ventured into blending her very own aromatherapeutic skincare formulas when she found herself pregnant with her second child. It's a story we're all now familiar with –– she had a bad allergy reaction to mainstream drugstore products and wanted something that was safe enough for her babies, and likewise for herself.
So... clean? Check. Cold-pressed? Yup. Certified organic, wild-crafted, native soils, forest-friendly, and Mother Nature? Absolutely, yes. We could already imagine a couple of you clean beauty junkies getting a high out of this paragraph's impressively clean vocabulary.
When circuit breaker descended upon Singapore, we shot a couple of inspiring women in the global industry –– Supergoop!'s founder, Holly Thaggard, and Olivia included –– some emails to check on how they are coping and making the best out of their time in lockdown and quarantines. Let's just say that every single one of them has been nothing short of inspiring and disciplined.
Here's what the London-based founder of Vanderohe, Olivia Thorpe, has been up to:
1. No School!
"No school run (hurray), so if the kids are happy with Daddy downstairs I'll sneak back up to bed with some breakfast and get some work done in peace. If I have time, I'll make up a claymask and leave it on whilst I reply to emails.
I wash off the clay mask with the Vanderohe No.1 Purifying Cleansing Oil and our new Sasawashi Face Cloth –– my perfect face cloth; it‘s antibacterial and exfoliating and a overall a more sustainable and effective alternative to traditional muslin cloths."
2. Now, Good Morning
3. Time to Work
"I work for the next 2-3 hours on Vanderohe –– this can be blending new batches, responding to customers, sorting orders or working on new formulations. I will be speaking with –– and working to –– many different times zones, as we work with a number of small, independent suppliers across the world to source our ingredients directly from the place of origin, as this allows us to deliver the most potent results."
4. To the Garden
"I always make sure I spend a good chunk of the day outdoors with the kids. If the weather is good, even better. We love pottering around in the garden, nurturing all the budding plants, building camps and just kicking a ball. The fresh air and time outside as a family that we never normally get is something I am trying to cherish –– this down-time that I don't normally allow myself allows me to be more efficient and productive with the time spent working."
"I usually work out on our cross-trainer mid-afternoon. I find this me-time really important during the current lockdown and it's essential for me to take time and reflect, to be grateful for all that I have. This allows me to maintain a positive outlook both physically and mentally."
"Once the kids are asleep, it's time for some down-time, whether it's watching my favourite series or settling down with a book and a glass of wine.
I like to unwind with a cup of calming chamomile tea in bed following my evening skincare routine, which involves a deep cleanse using our No.1 Purifying Cleansing Kit, and I'll add our exfoliating powder every other day for a really beautiful scrub. I find the scent of the cleansing oil so calming and grounding, it is the perfect way to unwind and have a stress free end of the day."
