'Where there is darkness, there is light'. A takeaway that sums up La Prairie's newest innovation, the White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire, the launch of this hero product saw the luxe beauty brand headed up to Art Basel in Hong Kong with an exclusive exhibition that highlighted the prominence of their work in the realm of art and science.
In linking the cutting-edge skincare industry to the artistic world, La Prairie has touched on a unique crossover that saw them collaborating with award-winning artist Julian Charrière on the project 'Light Upon an Imaginary Space' — an exhibition that focuses on the integral role of light, which is the essence that lies at the heart of the White Caviar collection... and the universe at large.
But why Charrière to artistically reinterpret the brand's breakthrough skincare series, you might ask? It was a natural fit, for the French-Swiss artist's work identifies with La Prairie's principles, stemming from a research background where he investigates the relationship between human civilization and the natural landscape, channeling them through mediums such as photography, performance and sculpture.
Elaborates Charrière on his connection to La Prairie: "Just as La Prairie is a pioneer in luxury skincare, my work constantly strives to push the boundaries of what is thought to be possible while being unafraid to forge new ways to implement new ideas. Whether it's a cream or a work of art, the result is merely the tip of an iceberg supported by an intense, methodical process of research and creative experimentation."
Working together around the theme of light, La Prairie and Charrière explored the power of this element through an icy Arctic landscape that's seemingly harsh at first glance, but is revealed to be striking and beautiful when shone upon with light. A striking poetic expression of the White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire to reflect the fact that the product is infused with Lumidose, the most potent illuminating ingredient ever discovered, the exhibition was "... the beautiful encounter between the science of light and the art of light."
More than just a one-off though, the artist and the brand connects on a deeper level, and it's one that is cultural for both of them share an inherent 'Swissness' being that Charrière is of French-Swiss ethnicity. In fact, their bond will see La Prairie acting as patron to Charrière's art documentary Towards No Earthly Pole — of which 'Light Upon an Imaginary Space' is the stepping stone — set to premiere in October at his upcoming exhibition at MASI Museo d'Arte della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland.
Sneaky peek here:
A majestic narrative for sure, La Prairie's presence in the art world can only go up from here, and this creative perspective on light – both the presence and absence of it – is precisely the marvel that is the White Caviar Crème Extraordinaire.
