Here's what perfumer Alberto Morillas has been up to while working from home
Check out that garden
Here's a question that we had: "How do perfumers work from home?" In the past two months since global cities implemented COVID-19 circuit breakers and lockdowns, we've spoken to beauty insiders of varying capacities –– a sunscreen label's founder, luxury skincare brand's founder, global makeup artist, wellness brand and retreat's founder and CEO, and a global supplements brand's CEO. We looked to the renowned Spanish perfumer, Alberto Morillas, who most recently nosed Flower by Kenzo Poppy Bouquet, a reinvention of Kenzo's classic Flower fragrance, alongside Dora Baghriche.
Turns out, it is possible for a perfumer to work from home (check out that sprawling garden at the end!).
Here, Alberto Morillas on his work from home routine:
Where are you based right now?
How has the lockdown affected your life?
I'm surrounded by fragrance every day and every minute; it is my passion. I haven't stopped working; I cannot. I'm seduced by the highest quality ingredients and the artistry of my craft. During the confinement, I did most of my work from home and still went into the office occasionally, respecting the new rules of conduct that are necessary in this strange and dangerous time.
How are you coping and making the best of your time at home?
This unprecedented situation has reminded me of what is important to me: my wife, my family, my love for perfumery. The power of fragrance is underestimated. Fragrance conveys a magic message mixed with love, emotion and psychology. It's been my focus and strength during quarantine.
A day in Alberto's life
Good morning! This is my new desk; it's also where I eat dinner. As you can see, I'm always working. Even before COVID, I worked at home, so I'm used to this. It's just a little different now that we're not really welcome in the office.
This is my view most of the morning. Work, flowers and a little daydreaming out the window.
In the afternoon, I like to go outside. I'm lucky enough to have a beautiful garden. I can test some new ideas, enjoy a coffee and the sunshine. It always helps to breathe in fresh air, and sometimes get new inspiration from the flowers, plants, fountain or passing smells.
