The 5-step process to creating your own bespoke lipstick

The lippie lab

The first Etude House Color Factory outside of Korea will have you playing the Pantone colour spectrum to get your very own customised lipstick

If you're the biggest K-beauty fanatic this side of our island, odds are you've already hit up Etude House's revamped flagship store and scored yourself a basketful of new beauty goodies. As part of an overhaul that sees the girly brand trading its princessy pinks for a more sophisticated neutral palette, the grown-up reveal also introduces the Color Factory concept to Singapore — the first of its kind to set up shop outside of Korea.

Using cutting-edge beauty technology, Etude House has dedicated a corner in its new space to lippie lovers who are looking to score a rouge that's completely unique to them. In as little as 50 minutes, you'll undergo a fairly intensive process that will take you from finding your It shade to choosing a case to engraving your lipstick. An experience that's all about you from start to end, here's what you can expect when you enter the Color Factory:

An assigned Color Artist will whip out a handy device called the 'Color Finder', which uses technology developed by the brand's Color Clinic Institute in Korea to quantify your skin tone. Using an XY chart to display your results, you'll be able to know once and for all whether you've got cool, neutral or pink undertones, and the Etude House foundation shade best suited for you (a number you can also apply to other Amorepacific sister brands).

A colour matching process that's fairly novel, you'll be sat with your hair pulled back so that your face is seen in its entirety while cloths of various colours are placed across your chest. Termed as 'Color Draping', each cloth batch is grouped by seasons, and this step determines what colour family will best highlight your features and skin tone. For instance, a bright summery blue or purple counteracts sallowness, while a deep pink could give your face a rosier cast. Makes sense, right?

We weren't kidding when we said there was a Pantone rainbow's worth of shades. You get to choose from 240 colours on a specific lip colour chart that's matched to you according to steps 1 and 2. Not only will the colour be tested out on your lips, and you'll also have it swatched on paper to see the pigmentation, texture and finish so you can compare and contrast across the shades you like. Of course, feel free to ask for recommendations from your Color Artist at any time it gets mind-bogglingly overwhelming.

Your chosen lipstick shade is off to get mixed and made but if you thought the hard part was over, here's round two. With 20 different cases in prints that are anywhere between cute, quirky, and playful, you may or may not spend the next several minutes deciding if pink flamingos are your spirit animal or if having your lipstick look like a popcorn tub speaks to you more.

Your bespoke lipstick is almost in your hands. All you have to do now is name it to own it, either with your moniker or a short message and after choosing which font you prefer, the Color Factory's engraving services will etch it out on the case you've picked. Voila, you now have your one-of-a-kind lippie.
