Peace of mind

Text: Emily Heng

Like people talking during a moviestylists badgering you into signing a package as they snip, shear, and slather your mane in all manner of foreign chemicals can be really annoying. We get it, they're just doing their jobs — but does it have to persist after you rejected them for the nth time? In the interest of preserving your sanity serenity, we scoured the Internet to hunt down the salons that won't hound you into making a (reluctant) return trip.

Be Salon

You'll feel a sense of calm upon entering Be Salon's space. The clean, minimalist interiors are modern as it is millennial-friendly, comprising marble-topped tables and sleek swivel seats. No cascading plants, Instagram-friendly zones, or overly-pushy sales staff in sight. As a long-time patron, I — beauty writer Emily Heng — can attest to the top-tier service, helpful tips, and skill in crafting one-of-a-kind hair looks. They've talked me off a ledge to many an impractical idea (see: Harley Quinn-style platinum locks), and executed tricky ones with aplomb. If anything, their stellar score on Google Reviews speaks volumes.

Harts Salon

There is no colour too extreme — or out of reach — for Harts's skilled technicians. A quick skim through their Instagram feed reveals a plethora of rainbow hues, from gradual gradient mauves to violet highlights. What's more, their thoughtful staff and attention to detail have earned them positive reviews aplenty on Yelp and Google alike.

RuleR Japanese Hair Salon

The boutique salon is armed with premium-quality Japanese styling products and an equally accomplished team to boot. Word on the street is that stylists Rie and Nao are ones to turn to for a super-flattering snip, while Teppei and Yuya specialise in dye jobs. Kick back and rest easy knowing that the only offers you'll be accosted with are for Japanese snacks and tea.

Leekaja Beauty Salon

Its exceptional reputation speaks for itself. With over 200 outlets found worldwide, the much-adored Korean franchise has brought their professionalism and expertise to our shores to provide a first-rate experience like no other. Customers have also praised the warm, calming ambience adorned with greenery and gorgeous wood panelling — all of which won't be punctuated by the sound of any aggressive hard-selling, thankfully. Did we mention that they have an in-house barista that serves up gourmet coffees and snacks, too?

Hair Studio Flamingo

You won't have to fret about being harangued at Hair Studio Flamingo for packages or hidden costs. Their full menu is up online, with prices clearly stated that they are inclusive of GST, alongside stylist profiles with their days off clearly displayed. How convenient. Drop by their Tanjong Pagar or Tiong Bahru outlets — both have garnered rave reviews for their helpful staff and mastery of all things hair.
