What are the best hair salons in Singapore? Here is Buro's ultimate list

Have you ever been sorely disappointed by a salon visit, either because the stylist just didn't understand what you needed, or thrust something upon you that you didn't want? Or have you inadvertantly been insulted by a stylist who proclaims that your hair is "too dry" and "needs a treatment"? Well, we have (numerous times in fact) which is why there are some hair salons that we trust and go back to repeatedly, and others that we avoid like the plague. Still there's nothing like a fresh haircut, brightening colour or resurrecting hair treatment to put a spring in your step and a smile on your face. To us, the grand trifecta of an excellent salon consists of the three 'S's: Service (including politeness and personability of the stylists), skill and surroundings. We've already given you our list of best facials in Singapore. Here's the curated list of the best salons in Singapore that make the cut.

Hair Philosophy
A lesser known gem, Hair Philosophy is run by creative director Chester Wong and salon director Leo Teo. We first tried babylights done by Wong, and were thrilled with the results, going on to recommend Hair Philosophy to family and friends. What we love about the place is the chic New York loft-like decor, the well-curated range of products (it uses Redken and Kevin.Murphy, among others) and the outstanding service. This salon knows its hair trends and the chemistry of hair, but are equally at home with meticulously-executed everyday colour and always puts the clients' needs and wants first.

Chez Vous
Chez Vous has become inadvertantly known as the salon that does fix-its — correcting and repairing disaster jobs done by other, less responsible salons. But that does not mean that is not a fantastic salon in its own right. Among its specialities are texture services. We have tried their Korean glass treatment and found it really improved our hair texture and shortened our morning routine. While the salon does crazy colours if requested by its clients, its real passion lies in designing flattering shades that bring out the best of each individual's colouring and features. While many Caucasian clients flock there, the salon is very much centred on its Asian clientale as well.
Must try: Its newest hair service #RightColourMatters is certainly worth trying if you're clueless as to what looks good, taking it account your skin tone, facial features and face shape, among other factors.

Kim Robinson
In a way, Kim Robinson's opulent space in Ngee Ann City is the grand dame of hair salons. It also has a Hong Kong outpost which Robinson shuttles between. What this salon offers is a private, luxurious experience and top notch service. While some know it for its blowouts and well-heeled crowd of tai tais who make up its clientale, we adore the service-centred approach, quality cuts and wide range of hair products (they sell everything from Davines to styling tools) and its in-house brand of hair accessories.
Must try: Cut and colour. If you're a newby, start with its iconic blowout, and prepare to be blown away.

Blow + Bar
Blow + Bar was one of the first salons to start the blowout trend in Singapore, but has expanded its service to include so much more from a permanent blowout that puts a new spin on a traditional perm, to seasonal colour trends. It has also expanded overseas to Jakarta and Beijing. In Singapore, the salon now operates out of both its original Rodyk Street location, and in a Boat Quay shophouse. The latter makes it easy enough for the Raffles Place crowd to access while still offering a pampering, private experience. We enjoyed our experience trying the BB Nude collection, done by stylist Avan, because the process was fast and fuss-free and the results, flattering — we loved the natural, tortoiseshell effect that still respected our hair. Affordable packages make it easy to get bang for your buck.
Must try: Its latest colour collections that are often modelled on local influencers. Or a blowout for a special occasion or payday treat.
Blow + Bar is at 40B Boat Quay, 6438-7005 and #01-32 The Watermark Condominium, 6238-7338

J's Salon
Another institution in Singapore, J's Salon is run by the husband-and-wife team of June and Johnny and have the distinction of being the only Kérastase Institute in Singapore. Located within the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Singapore, the salon offers relaxing views in a light-filled space and an experienced team of hair spa therapists and stylists. Splurge on a haircut by June who always seems to know what to do with hair — even our fine and wavy tresses — and try out the wearable hair colour services, which always respect the hair quality, by combining it with treatments.
Must try: You haven't lived till you've tried the hair spas that combine pampering protocol, soothing surroundings and cutting-edge products and technology that will leave you light-headed (in the best way).
