The best beauty moments at the 2017 Grammys
Steal the show
It's hard to stand out among a sea of well... pop superstars, which is why the divas of music tend to go all out when it comes to hair, makeup and costumes on Grammy night. Think Jennifer Lopez's iconic, green Versace dress in 2000 or the barely-there non-outfits donned over the years. While skin is always in — as seen by all the décolletté on display this year thanks to cut-outs and plunging necklines— there were some interesting beauty moments. Here are those that made the cut.
WHEN BEYONCÉ WENT GOLDEN
All bow down to Queen Bey. The songstress who is famously pregnant with twins looked resplendent in a super-embellished, golden gown. Wearing a golden headpiece like a halo — and evoking some serious religious and goddess iconography in the process — she literally shimmered thanks to golden highlights on her face, glittery eye makeup and a décoletté generously slathered with lots and lots of baby oil.
WHEN LADY GAGA BROUGHT THE (HEAVY) METAL
Peforming with metal legends Metallica, Gaga's clothes — think band tee and leather — and makeup took on a decided rocker chick vibe. Donning what seemed an amalgamation of punk, glitter rock and metal, Gaga checked all the boxes with pink and orange streaks in her hair, bold fuchsia lips and fiery metal eyes with sunset hues like red, copper and yellow glitter.
WHEN JENNIFER LOPEZ SHOWED A PASSION FOR PURPLE
Matching your eyeshadow to your dress is kind of a cliché, but we couldn't hate on J-Lo's makeup. Her smoky purple eyes picked up the lilac tones of her dress without being too obviously matchy-matchy, and her peach-nude lips and centre part are practically a beauty signature.
WHEN ADELE LOOKED MORE SCULPTED THAN A STATUE
Adele has a cleft to rival Kirk Douglas, and when she gets dolled up in a major way, we love how makeup can help her look so sculpted and polished. With her signature black, liquid liner, on fleek brows and some clever but subtle contouring and highlighting, this was Adele at her glow-y, magazine cover best.
WHEN KATY PERRY DID AGGRESSIVE BEDHEAD
If you've tried every colour of the rainbow from blue to purple to jet black, it can be hard thinking of ways to surprise the peeps with an unexpected 'do. With a nose ring, white nails and almost crumpled bedhead, her too pretty makeup was a bit of a strange contrast — check out those falsies and the precise lippie. The jury's still out on whether Katy Perry's super-textured, platinum tresses and tribute to grunge gone glam was a hit or a miss.
WHEN ALICIA KEYS LET HER MANE GO FREE
We've all heard about Alicia Key's declaration that she'll go makeup-free, and whether we agree with her stance on that or not, we have to say we're loving her bountiful Afro. Seen as she took to the stage, with Maren Morris, this was Keys at her most raw, natural and powerful.
