Set aside some pampering time at the new Spa by JW

Spa in the city

If you're tired of boring and uninspiring hotel spas, the Spa by JW's luxe and chic surroundings will be welcome respite

There are hotel spas — plush, darkened corners where weary travellers can get a much needed rub down — and then there is the Spa by JW, which was recently launched in the newly rebranded JW Marriott. Once you step in the first thing you notice is light. There's lot of light streaming in from the windows as well as in the decor, which is younger and fresher than most of the hotel spas we're used. Think a soothing palette of muted pastels, blues and greys reflected in the cushions, sofas and wall features. There's liberal use of wood too, but it's very chic and almost airy... not the typically dark and heavy, Balinese style, spa decor that was de rigeur in the past. Then there are the products used in its treatments. The spa collaborates with hip London brand Aromatherapy Associates and sells many of the products used in a casual, retail space at the entrance. Overall the vibe is very relaxed but also unerringly elegant.

Once inside you'll find lots of cool touches that sets the Spa by JW, above the rest. If you want a quickie shoulder or foot rub or scalp massage, the spa has an express treatment room with comfy leather chairs (with space age light features) so you can be in and out in an instant. Talk about a quick, pick-me-up. Choose from a 12 minute or 25 minute treatment — each designed with the busy traveller in mind. But if you can spare the time, we would highly recommend making a half-day of your spa treat. The locker room comes equipped with a steam room, as well as a jacuzzi, so you can indulge in even more pampering as you unwind post-treatment. Another thing that sets the spa aside are the plush, zero gravity chairs in the darkened, post-treatment, hangout rooms. You'll be able to recline almost upside down and yes besides feeling a rush of blood to the head, you'll also experience better circulation to further boost the effects of your treatment.

The spa menu is subdivided into four categories: Calm, Indulge, Invigorate and Renew. As each name suggests you can choose your treatment based on the state of mind you hope to achieve after the therapists have worked their magic fingers on you. We were treated to a 50-minute, Signature massage, but options are also available for jet-lagged travellers or for those who want a more aromatherapy-heavy option. We found the massage and the surroundings very calming. Again we couldn't help but notice the chic design touches like the round, hanging mirrors that we thought was a rattan bag at first and the warm, comfy spa beds. The spa prides itself on simplicity and this was certainly evident in the presentation and design of the massage we experienced. After stating our preferences, our therapist got to work, focussing on the areas we had indicated. If you're expecting fancy bells (literally) and whistles or elaborate rituals, this is not the place for you. But if you want an honest to goodness massage or facial and some bonus facilities to help you unwind, you'll want to make the time for a few hours here.
