Honeyed skincare: The products and treatments to treat yourself to

They've got the sweetness

Text: Angelyn Kwek

Honey-infused skincare is coming up in the beauty lexicon, and here’s the how-to if you're looking to pamper yourself with some of this nectar

There are plenty of applications for honey besides buttering your morning biscuit or being used as an allegory in a children's story. As far back as several thousand BCs, honey even took pride of place in ancient civilisations with the Egyptians offering the stuff to their deities as a sacrifice. Religious purposes aside, honey is coming up as the next in-thing for skincare following the turmeric trend, with several skincare brands picking up on its goodness and turning out products and treatments that utilise its soothing, moisturising, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties.

And if you're into DIY beauty treatments, chances are you've experimented with honey a time or two in your concoctions — like this yoghurt hair mask Priyanka Chopra swears by. But if you haven't and are looking to work a little honey into your beauty routine (sans the DIY fussiness), here are the products and treatments that'll sweeten up your skincare routine:

If you have only 5 minutes...
Try: Guerlain Abeille Royal Double R Renew & Repair Serum, $223

Make it count with this new innovation in Guerlain's signature anti-ageing range, which works a double formula that simultaneously repairs and renews. Inspired by dermatological procedures, you've got the three major acids — lactic, citric, and glycolic — to increase cell turnover and refine skin texture, while a lifting-effect technology stimulates the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and restores collagen fibres to achieve more elastic, firmer skin. Every pump dispensed also contains black bee royal jelly, a rare ingredient harvested from Black Bees native to Ouessant Island (it's a chunk of land at the south-western end of the English Channel), which has been proven to reduce wrinkles, tighten pores, and give you a radiant complexion over time. It's like getting a daily dose of the fountain of youth, only a lot less mythical than it sounds.

If you have 20 minutes...
Try: Chantecaille Detox Clay Mask, $142

For a more potent kick, as well as a deep-cleanse that resets the oil-moisture balance in your skin, this honey-infused mask is the way to go. Made with lush botanicals such as rosemary and burdock root, the black Kaolin clay does it all from absorbing oil and treating acne to minimising blackheads and whiteheads and shrinking the appearance of pores. Great at eradicating all that trapped impurities regular cleansing just can't get rid of, the pure honey in the formula then nourishes the skin while you leave the mask on and take a chill pill. Peeps who are forever fighting the never-ending war against clogged pores and oiliness, this is a detox plan you'll want to make space for in your skincare regime.

If you have 90 minutes...
Try: Porcelain Honey Beespoke Facial, $425.86

Go for the ultimate honey experience with Porcelain Spa's latest facial, specially developed in conjunction with Sofitel Singapore City Centre to cater to the shared demographic of both brands, which are modern globetrotters and time-strapped working professionals seeking luxury and efficacy. Developed by Porcelain's founder Pauline Ng over six weeks of intensive research, this is a power facial meant to instantly brighten, rejuvenate, purify and hydrate the skin.

In six curated steps, you get a full pamper that includes the spa's signature shiatsu face massage, electrophoresis combined with cryotherapy, as well as red LED therapy. The fancy tech aids in stimulating microcirculation, promoting oxygenation and detoxification on a cellular level, and improving collagen production and hydration levels — you know, all the good things we want for our skin. And all this is on top of three new Porcelain products exclusive to the Honey Beespoke treatment, which is a honey almond scrub that exfoliates off dead skin cells, a milk and honey firming mask rich in anti-oxidants to deeply hydrate and lift, plus a bee propolis extract combined with thyme, camphor and eucalyptus to care for oily, problematic skin. Alternatively, if you have dry skin concerns, or if you're allergic to bee propolis, your therapist will tailor the products accordingly to best suit your complexion.

And having tried-and-tested the facial, yours truly is giving it a golden star for visibly plumping my skin and delivering a boost of much-needed hydration to combat the perennial dryness for my forehead and cheeks. It also calmed the sudden outbreak I was experiencing (and completely freaking out over) due to sun over-exposure while I was gallivanting across Kyoto a week prior. Coincidentally, the Honey Beespoke facial has been designed to be a pick-me-up to re-energise your complexion before you fly off for your next holiday. Well, I'd say pencil in for a session before and after, because this is one sweet treat perfect for de-stressing stressed out skin.
