This is a makeup case study in how to wear face jewels without being tacky

If you love your #FOTDs with a little something shiny but you're always waiting for the right occasion to wear them (i.e. only at music festivals and Halloween), Lupita Nyong'o going bejewelled at the 2018 ACE Awards has proven face crystals for the red carpet can be apropos. And it's got the thumbs up from everyone too, because it changed what was typically considered tacky to tasteful with a pop art-esque flair. To be fair though, Nyong'o has been slaying the beauty game for a while now, with winning looks as recently as the CFDA Fashion Awards and at Cannes 2018. Her latest face paint is only adding on to the credence that she's one beauty chameleon to follow. And it starts here by trying your hand at recreating her bedazzled mien:

The look
All things considered, Nyong'o's look is actually very simple in order to let the embellishments be the focal point. Her complexion is kept glowing with a light layer of foundation, and a touch of blush on the apples of her cheeks gives her a healthy flush. A sheer coral lip pairs with the pop of bright coral drawn across her eyelids, which plays peek-a-boo whenever she glances down. Lancôme products were used to achieve her eye look, but we can't say for sure what. One of the Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Sticks, perhaps.

The face jewels
While the actress wore sapphire and emerald-coloured Swarovski cabochons on her face due to the occasion (it was the biggest night for the Accessories Council), shelling out a pretty penny for expensive rhinestones all the time isn't going to work out for us regular Janes. Instead, try finding your crystals from nail supply shops or source for them online if you're going to buy in bulk. Our recommended go-to is The Gypsy Shrine, which does everything from face and body bling to biodegradable glitter.

The makeup artist
'Glamour with a touch of quirk' was how makeup artist Nick Barose described the look. He was actually inspired by Pride Month where makeup is all about fun and artistic expression. Barose himself is no stranger to the celebrity circuit — he's responsible for Nyong'o's molten gold lips at this year's CFDA Fashion Awards — and is known for pushing his famous clients to try new things. That said, he did a test run on himself first to find out if the look was solid.
