Cardi B and Janelle Monáe are major beauty inspiration right now
If you haven't heard rapper Cardi B is taking over the music world with her debut album Invasion of Privacy. Working with everyone who is hot right now, from her fiancé Offset's rap group Migos to Chance the Rapper to SZA, she's proven she's no one hit wonder with her cleverly, vicious wordplay and emotionally charged delivery. Bleach cereal anyone? And we must mention that she has certainly upgraded her look, with more refined hair and makeup, cool wigs and clever throwback references.
Hot on her heels is singer/actress/model Janelle Monáe, who released her astonishingly cool video for her single Pynk, featuring her maybe girlfriend Tessa Thompson. Monáe has always had a very strong beauty identity with creative hair and eye-popping makeup, and her latest looks are no exception. The icing on this cake? The two women appear to be friends (Monáe is at her album launch in the photo above). While we breathlessly await the inevitable collaboration between the two, here are the beauty moments we are living for.
THAT ALBUM COVER
Cardi B is kind of a beauty chameleon sporting a Cleopatra like wig in her Bodak Yellow video and long, blonde waves for her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. But on the album cover for Invasion of Privacy, her Kodak yellow finger waves, bold purple lips and signature tongue pose — all while decked out in a retro, checked jacket — will surely become an iconic look in time to come.
EVERY LOOK IN JANELLE MONAE'S PYNK VIDEO
Sporting possibly every shade of pink lipstick imaginable, we love the makeup, hair and nail looks in this video that seems to nod towards Solange's hyper-stylised vids and Dua Lipa's girl gang vibe in New Rules. And don't get us started on those vagina pants!
WHEN CARDI CHANNELED LINDA E
For her performance of on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where she performed the song Money Bag, Cardi's leather bodysuit, chains, platinum pixie wig and heavy contouring was a throwback to supermodel Linda Evangelista's Chanel look circa 1995 in a Harper's Bazaar spread. Instagram account Diet Prada approved of the homage, and even pointed out that there was a touch of '90s-era Versace in the look. And Evangelista herself was suitably impressed, re-gramming Diet Prada's post and writing,"Dying!!!".
WHEN JANELLE WENT TO THE OSCARS AFTER PARTY AS JANE BOND
What's not to love about her single curl, full brows and inky black liner? Absolutely nothing.
WHEN CARDI WENT ANGELIC
Her Grammy's look of a white dress from Ashi Studio, loose updo and soft makeup, presented a more romantic facet to Cardi's usual looks. While Monáe's blonde crop, teal under liner and dramatic faux lashes were yet another masterclass in beauty.
