Best shows on Netflix for hair and makeup inspiration: Glow Up, Dynasty, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, etc
Not to be dramatic, but these are desperate times. No, this isn't about the Covid-19 pandemic or the mass hysteria it's spawned, but rather, the well of beauty inspiration that has dried up now that Fashion Week is well and truly over. It doesn't help, of course, that Euphoria — the HBO teen drama recognized for its unprecedented makeup looks — has been on hiatus since August 2019. Or that beauty YouTubers in the vein of Bretman Rock and Tati Westbrook haven't dropped a tutorial for close to three weeks running (that's forever in YouTube time, FYI).
What's a beauty buff got to do? Get resourceful, it seems. Lucky for you, we've done the work and hunted down the best small-screen offerings with exceptional hair and makeup selections. Time to boot up that Netflix account in the name of research, ladies and lads.
Glow Up: Britain's Next Makeup Star
We're still waiting upon James Charles' reality series that is supposedly Project Runway, but for makeup artists — in the meantime, though, we'll turn to British programme Glow Up to sate our appetite. To sum up, the series revolves around 10 up-and-coming UK makeup artists duking it out for the top dog spot. The winner will land a contract with an established makeup luminary within the industry and bragging rights, naturally. From avant-garde, high-fashion makeup to gore, there's never a boring moment or lacklustre lewk.
The 2017 reboot contains the same high-stakes drama, intrigue, and first-rate beauty game. A show surrounding heirs, heiresses, and all the complications that come with being, well, loaded, it poses no surprise that they'll be sporting makeup as luxurious as their wardrobe. We're talking rich, smoky pops of colour on lids, knife-sharp liners, and gravity-defying 'dos.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Campy is probably the best way to describe the remake of this beloved comic. And while it doesn't take its plotlines all too seriously (Undead boyfriends! Orgies! Ritual sacrifice!), there's no faffing around when it comes to Sabrina's — or rest of the cast's — makeup. Vampy dark lips, bleached locks, and rouged-up cheeks are mainstays in all its witchy, goth goodness.
A fast-paced, high fantasy series with makeup that doesn't just comprise bloodied faces and tangled tresses? We're just as surprised as you are. Fact is, while the show might draw comparisons to Game of Thrones, it includes magical elements that allow for eyeshadow, lipstick, and bronzer opportunities abound. Female lead, Yennefer of Vengerberg, for instance, rocks green lids and a smoky eye so enviable, it's generated hundreds of tutorial videos in response.
An oldie-but-a-goodie, the period drama encapsulates the best of '70s makeup. Expect teased, beehive tresses, frosted blue eyeshadows, and fluttery lashes amongst many other stellar looks, with each character bringing a specific style to the table. Whether it's Peggy Olson's piecey fringe or Betty Draper's ruby red pout, there's always something to see — and admire — from this critically-acclaimed piece.
