Best Instagram Story face filters for selfies in 2020, as tested by the Buro. Singapore team

Prone as I am to a multitude of emotions, shame remains a sentiment I'm not entirely familiar with. Call it an inflated sense of ego, or perhaps a thick skin gleaned from the years growing up under my mother's critical eye (ha) — but either way, it doesn't pain me to admit that I am ridiculously, absolutely, and unquestionably vain. I suppose if you were being generous, you'd say it has to do with my job. In truth, well, it probably has more to do with my ballooned sense of self-worth. And so, comes the need to look good in every circumstance, from sweating it out at the gym to chowing down on fried chicken with my grease-stained digits. Makeup and a consistent skincare routine have a large part to play in this lofty pursuit, assisted (of course) by technological advancements. Translation: face filters.
Instagram Story filters, to be exact. That's mask-like superimpositions that enhances your moneymaker at the mere tap of a button; augmented reality so potent that it has drawn criticism and applause globally - inciting cries of catfishing, deception, and an altered sense of reality where impressionable teens lose sense of how they actually appear. The moral implications of it all, though, is a story for another time. Today, we're looking at the most remarkable of the lot, a stirring slew of filters capable of transforming a sleep-deprived, zombified visage with minimal effort. Here's a documentation with my experiences with 'em all.
Rare by Kendramishell
I've dubbed this the hot girl filter, purely for its superb ability to transform anyone into the stereotypical Instagram Baddie. Users are granted soap-like brows, flawless skin, and a gentle flush over cheeks reminiscent of the e-girl trend plaguing our TikTok feeds. Heck, you can even try your hand at coloured contacts without incurring any cost, with four options — hazel, green, blue, and grey — available on hand. You're a glowing, radiant vision despite an hour of sleep and too much caffeine. You're a Glossier ambassador. The possibilities are endless, dear reader.
Girl Crush by Sunniesface
I was introduced to this filter via Lifestyle Editor, Janice Sim. You might recognise Sunnies Face as the cult lip brand freshly arrived on our shores — and it seems stellar makeup products aren't they only thing the brand is accomplished at. For those seeking something a tad more natural than Rare, I'd suggest this face-smoothing filter that adds just a hint of rouge over the cheeks and lips. You'll appear windswept and fresh-faced, like how we'd want to look after an invigorating run. Except, you know, that never happens in Singapore's humid climate. Ah, well.
Goldie. Glow by Mayttearaneda
Should lashes and blush be a little OTT for your taste, this blurring filter is right up your alley. There's not much beyond a slight sun-kissed tint and skin-smoothing capabilities, whereupon it gives a subtle lit-from-within glow that will have folks second-guessing if it's a filter or just golden-hour lighting. Nice.
+2 Vintage Blush by Thaifurtado
My first-ever Instagram face filter! This one deserves a shout-out purely for the flattering colours it imposes upon your face, all of which is accentuated by an adorable smattering of freckles that will have you looking like you just emerged from a cottagecore photoshoot. It's the kind of filter I'd imagine would show up in a flashback that works of the sole emotional moment of an action-packed movie, peppered over the faces of loved ones and filmed on an old-school camera. Liam Neeson would star in it, probably.
Group Face Swap by W.vv.vv
When in doubt, just steal someone else's face. Genius.
