The great cover-up

Many a late night sin to hide? Here are the heavy-duty (but not heavy-wearing) concealers that’ll get the job done

Starting the new year all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed can be had if you're wielding the right concealer — you know, to cleverly counteract all the as-of-yet-to-diminish signs of your holiday partying. Or even if it's to banish the usual undereye circles, blemishes and annoying zit, which, let's face it, is the ever-present bane in our quest for flawless skin. And if you think 'thick and cakey' is the only way to go if you need extra-duty coverage, think again because a couple of new-in formulations (and old favourites) work a winning lightweight texture that wears just like skin. Below, we round-up five foolproof options to answer your complexion SOS:

1. Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Aquacealer, $40
A two-in-one that combines concealer with serum, this is the one if you need that extra boost of hydration. Made up of 20 per cent water and Tarte's propriety Rainforest of the Sea complex, it protects your skin from daily aggressors and premature ageing on top of covering up imperfections.

2. Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place High Cover Coverage SPF35, $40
If you can't live without sun protection in one form or another, you'd want a concealer that can hide and prevent spots. Concentrated yet lightweight with oil-controlling properties, it'll hide what needs hiding without ever settling into fine lines or pores.

3. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, $46
An oldie but a goodie, this cult classic just had to make list. Besides being buildable, brightening and easy to blend, the doe-foot applicator is the perfect shape and size to deposit the right amount of product on the undereye area. It's not labelled Holy Grail for nothing, gals.

4. Clarins Instant Concealer, $42
In case you're still playing beauty catch-up from yesteryear, Clarins has brought in their makeup range and their Instant Concealer is the bestseller for eradicating dark circles. With a fluid texture that lets you customise the coverage, all you need is a little to go a long way.

5. Urban Decay All Nighter Concealer, $40
Waterproof, mattifying, and a 24-hour wear to outlast even the sweatiest gym session; Urban Decay is bringing out the big guns with its newest concealer. Inspired by their All Nighter setting spray (which we're big fans of, by the way), its formula is so ultra-pigmented it can even cover up tattoos.
