deLaCour: Contemporary Swiss timepieces
In an interconnected digital world where people check their smartphones before brushing their teeth, global news is broken on Twitter, and everyone has front-row access to fashion shows via Instagram, Snapchat or Periscope; the continued attraction of a mechanical watch lies not in its ability to tell the time (no matter how precise), but in its ability to tell a story.
deLaCour was established to convey that exact sentiment. Co-founded in 2003 by Alfred Terzibachian and Louai Kuzbari, the Manufacture brings together Swiss watch-making with top jewellery know-how to create unique and luxurious timepieces that cater to the demands of the international jet set as well as avant-garde collectors. With the slogan 'Since Tomorrow', deLaCour plays on the concept of duality — formal and casual, tradition and innovation, classic and conceptual — to inspire a design ethos that pays respect to the past, but importantly, also has its eyes firmly fixed on the future. Progress is the name of the game.
This inherent duality in the brand's DNA was evident in their first timepiece, the Bichrono: A dual time-zone watch in an oversized tonneau-shaped case. Not only did it pioneer the novel use of dual independent chronograph movements, but also, served as the launching pad to the watchmaker experimenting with unconventional materials for its dial face. Constant research and development — combined with the company's bespoke service — allowed the brand to offer dials made from natural precious wood (Bichrono Hommage), pulverised asphalt (Bichrono Asphalt) and even Tobacco leaf (Bichrono Fidelidad) to name but a few. Talk about a conservation starter.
Boasting a similar shape to the iconic Bichrono, the deLaCour City collection of timepieces (launched in 2004) takes inspiration from the human form; in particular, the curved silhouette of the hips. Highly versatile and elegantly designed for both men and women on the go, the City collection has grown to become one of the Manufacture's best sellers and is now available in several limited edition permutations.
Our favourites from the collection include: The sophisticated City Attitude with a white (or black) mother-of-pearl dial housed under sapphire crystal and powered by an automatic DC261 movement with hand-stitched crocodile straps; the City Cadet II with its double time-zone display (perfect for the modern global citizen) in either a steel or pink gold case that features both a day and date aperture; and lastly, the sporty City Caractère with its plunging construction (reminiscent of a Roman arena), SuperLuminova Arabic numerals, date window at 1 o'clock, power reserve of 42 hours, and water resistance certified up to 5 atmospheres.
Whether you're after understated elegance or playful extravagance, deLaCour has a timepiece to match your personal tastes and preferences. And, in the rare case that they don't, their bespoke service allows them to create a unique watch to suit your individual needs.
