Aviation meets horology: The Richard Mille Tourbillon Split Seconds
Best of both worlds
Much like two parallel universes that advance alongside each other — familiar yet never intersecting — the aviation industry and the domain of haute horlogerie have always corresponded in similar aspects if one looks closely enough.
Both fields are dedicated to the constant advancement of modern technology while honouring the traditions that governs their respective arenas. It is this resemblance that captures and inspires the imagination of Richard Mille, spurring the Swiss luxury watchmaker to reach out to Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) for a collaborative effort of epic proportions.
This grand unification of capabilities forges an entirely new horizon that reflects both aeronautics and horlogerie. Drawing upon their vast experience creating customised aircrafts for private clients, ACJ drafted designs for the Tourbillon Split Seconds while working closely with Richard Mille's department of research and development. The end result is a timepiece that mirrors the incomparable superfluity of luxury jets and the finest of Swiss watchmaking: An open worked skeleton design that utilises grade 5 titanium, with movement parts coated in aeronautical protectants that prevent corrosion and environmental damage.
At once visually arresting and dramatically breathtaking, the esteemed timepiece houses a new RM50-02 tourbillon calibre and a torque indicator that optimises chronometer functions within its distinctive, multi-hulled frame. The titanium alloy that forms the case is the same used in the turbine engines of Airbus jets, ensuring peak performance even in high temperatures and elevated pressure. As a mark of the synergistic kinship between both companies, Torq set screws bearing the engraved pattern of the Airbus insignia now line the outer edge bezel where the iconic Richard Mille screws usually sit.
A premiere of flight and fancy has never had a more visceral connection than the masterpiece that is the RM50-05 ACJ Tourbillon Split Seconds — brimming with an unconditional harmony of finesse and unfailing functionality.
The RM 50-02 ACJ Tourbillon Split Seconds is available exclusively at Richard Mille boutiques. Limited to only 30 pieces.
