Go cruising with the Officine Panerai America’s Cup collection
May you sail straight
Official partnership is a big deal; just look at football, Formula 1, or even the Olympics, and the prestige pairings that have come about from these match-ups. Hopping onto this esteemed shortlist is Officine Panerai as they announce the role of official partner for the 35th edition of the America's Cup, sharing the time-honoured sailing sport's propensity for competitive innovation and avant-garde technicalities. Rooting for Oracle Team USA, the defending titleholder, the maison has debuted an exclusive collection that boasts five timepieces dressed in the regatta's signature colours. Four watches proudly bears Team USA and America's Cup logos while a singular piece totes the emblem of Softbank Team Japan — the newest sail squad that made partner with Panerai, returning to the scene following a 15-year absence.
True to form as a storied competition, the America's Cup collection reflects the same legacy by putting a fresh spin on the celebrated Luminor watch (because what other venerated timepiece would do?) and its varied models. Inspired by the progenitor that was created for the Italian Navy, the 3 Days Automatic Acciaio is the first of five reinvented Panerai classics, featuring a black dial, a small seconds counter, a water-resistance of up to 300 metres and of course, it's renowned three-day power reserve made possible by its double-barelled automatic movement.
Equally making the cut is the 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica, integrating the maison's cutting-edge expertise into a sportier timepiece crafted from a specially-derived synthetic ceramic that gives its casing a matte black look. Equipped with a flyback function, the moving chronograph pointers instantly return to zero without needing to stop the hands at all — a clever system crucial in a close-cutting competition. Crafted for a maximised read-off, the small minutes and seconds gauges are distinguished by markers denominated with America's Cup colours and are positioned at the centre of the dial. Closely following these specs is the 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio, the watch that accompanied Oracle Team USA, circa 1950. With its historical link to the seas, it's practically designed for sailing enthusiasts.
But to truly sit as close as possible to these America's Cup champions — in haute horlogerie terms, we mean — the 8 Days Acciaio is the official timepiece of the team members, uniquely manufactured for 2017's race. Solid and reliable, a minimalist watch face reflects the highly functional aesthetics, sporting a small seconds at 9 o'clock and pronounced indexes that illuminate with top-notch visibility even in the dimmest conditions. Powered by a hand-wound calibre manufactured in-house at Panerai's Manufacture Neuchâtel, its impressive 8-day long power reserve means you'll be sailing for days.
And on the topic of precision and performance, Officine Panerai has also dropped a 3 Days Automatic Acciaio for Softbank Team Japan, the latest qualifier to make the finals. Deviating from the other watches in the collection, this piece bears Team Japan's logo on the caseback and is decorated with contrasting stitching representative of the red and white Japanese flag. Now, who's regatta ready?
The limited edition America's Cup collection is available at the Officine Panerai boutique at Ion Orchard.
