A charitable exclusivity: Kari Voutilainen for the 2016 Kidz Horizon Appeal Charity Ball
For the kids
For a worthy cause, no price is too great: The annual Kidz Horizon Appeal Charity Ball 2016 will see a one-of-a-kind Kari Voutilainen creation taking centrestage as the auction's pièce de résistance on 20 August.
A fundraiser that champions the chronically ill children of Singapore, the ball was spurred by the passing of the local horophile community's prominent member, Duncan Wang, a fervent watch collector and an avid supporter of several causes. In remembrance of Wang, family and friends set about organising a charity that combines both his passions to financially aid the children suffering from cancer, diabetes and other chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Since its inauguration in 2010, Kidz Horizon Appeal (KHA) — in conjunction with Wang's family and the horology industry — has raised more than $600,000 to benefit these less fortunate children.
Now a tradition, a 'Duncan watch' is auctioned off annually to support KHA, and this year will see renowned independent Swiss watchmaker Kari Voutilainen offering a unique edition of one of his iconic timepieces for the cause. Making its debut this August, the Voutilainen GMT-6 wristwatch is an elegantly robust piece entirely conceptualised and assembled in Voutilainen workshops. A haute horlogerie classic that utilises a proprietary movement featuring a sprung-balance system for perfect timing with an outer Breguet overcoil, the GMT-6 has four gold-inertia blocks to adjust the daily rate. With a two-escape wheel configuration to provide a direct impulse to the balance, this Voutilainen creation is remarkably energy efficient with a longevity and stability to weather everyday use.
An exceptional timepiece that integrates the GMT mechanism into its workings, a disc-shaped indicator at 6 o'clock shows 24 hours and a day-to-night pointer. Entirely unobstructed, the sublime dial allows one to admire the sleek detailing of the enamelled central section, as well as the white gold and steel hands. A titanium case polished to perfection by hand and outfitted in hand-stitched crocodile leather, the Voutilainen GMT-6 — also known as the 'Duncan watch number 6' — carries the hopes and dreams of Singapore's chronically ill and needy children with an anticipation for a successful fundraiser evening to help better their future.
The exclusive Voutilainen GMT-6 will be auctioned off at the Kidz Horizon Appeal Ball on 20 August.
