The horology elements have coalesced to release a veritable supernova: The Big Bang Unico Sapphire. As revolutionary as its moniker, this earth-shattering timepiece is carving a new epoch in Hublot's history that brings the Swiss maison into a new futuristic age.
An innovative manufactore that prides itself on its niche creations that transform rare materials into artful chronographs — such as the world's only scratch-resistant gold timepiece, the Magic Gold — Hublot has raised the bar this year by crafting their newest timepiece straight from sapphire.
Sapphire is just behind diamond in terms of hardness — making it a complicated material to machine — and has always been reserved for private collections or one-of-a-kind pieces. But Hublot has tackled this complex challenge head-on, producing 500 pieces of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire; all without damaging the gem's unique and rare properties.
Cut entirely from sapphire blocks, the case middle, bezel and back are the hardest and most scratch-proof surfaces. Paired with titanium to form the spine, screws, crown and buckle, this resilient chronograph is second-to-none with its skeleton dial moulded from transparent resin to reveal the elaborate gears of the proprietary Unico HUB1242 movement. A silhouette of lightweight minimalism that belies its might, the Big Bang Unico Sapphire is the mechanical embodiment of negative space — a gem of lucid luminosity that will never wink out.
