The parallels between race car driving and watchmaking are seemingly tenuous, but Audemars Piguet's new edition of the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer pulls the two together. Inspired by the legendary Michael Schumacher, who won the F1 World Championship a whopping seven consecutive times, the timepiece is built to resemble the laptimers used to record timings for race car drivers.
With a chassis made of forged carbon, the watch face measures 44mm and features pushpieces made from ceramic and pink gold. The watch also boasts a mechanism incorportaing no fewer than three column wheels, which control the chronograph sequence and the complex laptimer sequence. Subtle homages to Schumacher also abound: Seven stars are etched into left side of the case in honour of his seven-time win, while his distinctive 'MS' monogram appears on the pushpiece.
Coming in a limited run of 221 (the number of point-winning races Schumacher has competed in) the Royal Oak Concept Michael Schumacher is truly a world-class tribute to the ultimate race car champion.
