Technology meets tradition: IWC Schaffhausen Pilot’s Watches
Precisely on course
What makes a good travel companion? If your answer is fuss-free with an impeccable sense of timekeeping, then the new Pilot's Watches from IWC Schaffhausen is your ideal globetrotting mate. 2016 sees this iconic aviator's watch from the 1940s' remade into two modern incarnations: The Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 55 and its smaller twin, the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 48.
The historic 52-calibre Big Pilot's Watch was the largest wristwatch IWC Schaffhausen had ever made and it also heralded the birth of the label's observer's watch range. Fast forward 75 years and the successor has exceeded its forerunner with a case diameter that boasts a remarkable 55 millimetres, all backed by the brand's cutting edge watch technology.
With a look reminiscent of the original but fashioned from titanium that's lightweight and comfortable, the watch face is decorated with luminescent numerals and a date display that are glass-secured to prevent displacement by air pressure changes. Providing further protection is a soft-iron inner case that shields the watch against magnetic fields. Topped with a friction clutch screw-in crown to avoid over-winding damage and finished with a cleverly designed strap that doesn't allow slipping when worn, the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 55 demonstrates that it's not just impressive — it's also intuitive.
Taking a leaf from its big brother's book, the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 48 is crafted to the same standards, with exceptions to its size. Coming in at a smaller 48-millimetre diameter but no less impressive and eye-catching, this compact version is perfect for the ladies or men with slender wrists. An effective multi-tasker, these timepieces are right at home at the office, formal dinner functions and 30,000 feet in the air. A winning coalition of state-of-the-art Swiss watch expertise with understated classic elegance, IWC Schaffhausen's new Pilot's Watches is the dream of every watch enthusiast.
Available exclusively from selected IWC boutiques.
The Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 55 is limited to 100 pieces and the Big Pilot's Heritage Watch 48 is limited to 1,000 pieces.
