#FirstClassFriday: The Coco Avant Chanel high jewellery collection
Once upon a time
She was the precocious designer, the non-conformist, and the style maven who saw beyond the restrictions of feminine fashion: She was Mademoiselle Chanel who built an empire. And yet her poignant past before the glamour was a chapter that went mostly untouched... until the Coco Avant Chanel collection. Launched as a tribute to Coco Chanel when she was known simply as Gabrielle to the world, this assemblage is a high jewellery embodiment of her closest confidantes who accompanied, influenced and encouraged her in the early days of her career.
Enthused about in our Haute Joaillerie spring 2017 round-up that namedropped a handful of Mademoiselle Coco's compatriots who made up the collection — each a veritable parure on its own — the entirety of Coco Avant Chanel comprises a staggering 49 pieces, fabricated in motifs of lace and ribbon. Two elements that established Gabrielle's style cred when she debuted her decorated boater hats at the races, this feminine inspiration is the running theme woven throughout the collection, featuring diamonds inlaid in swooping silhouettes — be it draped, wound or knotted — emphasised with various precious gems such as pearls, spinels and Padparadscha sapphires.
Imbued with a fresh and youthful aesthetic, the stylised lace pieces — a set of which is aptly named 'Gabrielle Chanel' in a nod to her favourite bloom — crafts camellia flowers among its exquisite latticework, another creative realisation that reflects the symmetry of Gabrielle Chanel's bold scissor cuts. Utterly brilliant in its refined simplicity, this is the high jewellery collection that stands up for the fundamentals of the Chanel style, and stands out with an atypical allure meant for all the elegant would-be aspirants.
The Coco Avant Chanel collection is available at the Chanel Fine Jewellery boutique.
