Maria Sharapova on tennis, pre-game rituals, and the things that turn her on
WTA Finals Singapore
She might have bowed out of the Wuhan Open and United States Open due to a string of injuries, but Maria Sharapova is primed to make her return at the season-ending WTA Finals taking place from 25 October to 1 November. If her performance last evening at the floating tennis platform at Clifford Pier is anything to go by, the Russian tennis superstar looks set to make a strong comeback. In this interview, we put the current world No.3 and International Brand Ambassador for evian through the famed Bernard Pivot questionnaire and find out more about how she has prepared for her return to the court.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I spend time by myself to really focus on the task ahead. I listen to music to psych myself up and get the adrenaline flowing.
How do you ensure you stay in top form for the season?
Tennis is truly a year-round sport. Taking more than three days off decreases muscle memory, so I am effectively training all-year-round.
As evian's international ambassador, what do enjoy most about working with the brand?
I only like to work with brand partners who create top quality products. Evian is recognised worldwide for its unsurpassed quality. It's very much a couture product. The newly designed bottles that evian recently unveiled embraces its unique transparency and is a look that is impactful, refined and fashionable — which is something I enjoy representing. I also like that the brand embodies a positive, playful and youthful attitude and stands for the "Live Young" state of mind. It is always enjoyable to work with brands that promote positive messages.
What is your favourite word?
Strength. It applies to so many things past the physical. There's emotional strength, mental strength, entrepreneurial strength, and more.
What is your least favourite word?
The word "No".
What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Determination and the ability to not only reach a goal, but surpass it.
What turns you off?
Negative people. There is always room for improvement. I get put off by people who settle instead of reaching for a better way.
What sound or noise do you love?
Cheering. Especially from young girls at tennis camps. They're just getting started on their journey of exploring their love for the sport.
I would attempt to have my own fashion collection, one that reflects my personal lifestyle
What sound or noise do you hate?
Traffic and horns on excess.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I have such a deep-seated entrepreneurial passion and also bear a great love for design. I would attempt to have my own fashion collection, one that reflects my personal lifestyle.
What profession would you not like to do?
Anything that puts me in an office everyday. I thrive on change. Despite my training schedule, each day is different and offers so many possibilities through my brand partners.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
You've made a difference and inspired others.
